How do you store yours.
on: September 10, 2011, 01:05:39 AM
Hi, i have quite a few MT's, all of which apart from the ones i use are stored in their sheaths in my gun (air) cupboard.

When i get a new one i remove the tool and sheath from the box and store the box complete with instructions, the small plastic bag that the tool (leatherman) comes in and any accessories like pocket clips and screwdriver bits separately. Then place the tool in its sheath then place on a shelf in my gun cupboard.

The four i use, a TTI, BO wave, Surge and Super Tool are locked in a separate drawer.

Now i am thinking maybe i should take them all out and store them out of their sheaths for the same reasons i would not store my rifles in there slips, which is if for any reason any damp gets into them you may not realise until its too late.

So how do you store yours, in their sheaths or not. or do you go the whole hog and keep them packaged in their boxes as they were when they left the factory.

My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.

I store mine in drawers without the sheaths. The sheaths I tend to keep in their respective boxes, and the older stock, the sheaths are thrown into a deep drawer all akimbo. The drawers themselves are open to the air...as nothing of steel ever rusts in my house. Sealing them can contain humidity and exasperate the rusting process.

The boxes I store elsewhere.

Mine are stored in their sheaths, but that's only because I don't have the storage space to double up on volume. I'm also a tool user and not trying to keep them pristine. If you want to keep them shiny and defect free, then definitely look at storing them out of the sheaths.

For me, I just need them to be functional

I use a little wood machinist chest, no sheaths.

I am not a fan of sheaths, ONLY when I know I am reaching for my MT more than 10 a day, do I wear one (recently helping a friend move into his new house).
Why stop now?

I am going to pick up a couple of these tomorrow, And mount them on the wall in my gun cupboard.

I buy  a new one with full intention of using it then think that is far to shiny to use. so i think i know if i buy two i can use one and still have a shiny one.
Then the shiny one is banished to a dark corner never to see the light of day apart from the odd occasion i get them all out for a looksie .

But its the the ones i use and that are ever so slightly abused that i really like.

My favourite is my vice grip 6lc tool box which i use every day at work and it shows, but it still works perfectly.
My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.

Why does that remind me of a group of people I know?

I think I will get a nice 1+4 inch board about 12 inches long, stain it,and put some brass cup hooks about i inch apart. Most of my MTs have a split ring or lanyard so I will hang them from the cup hooks. That should look good in my computer room mounted on the wall.

I pitch all my boxes, keep the sheaths in a wooden ammo box, and then store the tools in a wooden machinist chest (with a few tiny packages of moisture absorber here and there).

There is also a half dozen or so that live in different places like autos, BOB, work EDC bag, man bag, etc... They all are in sheaths of one sort or another.

I just throw mine in a drawer or wherever I can find them easily.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?
