SuperTool 200!
on: December 20, 2007, 05:30:07 PM
The supertool 200 is a tremendous tool. I never really used it- up until today.. I used the awl to poke a hole in this nice swissgear belt I bought a Marshall's for only 15 usd! It is one great tool. It doesn't weigh too much either. Compared to having a Surge on my belt: I cannot tell its on me! I still cannot believe I lost two surges due to carelessness and neglect... I am still so impressed by Spoon, can't wait to suprise him with a CX!

As I've posted before, if I had to trust my life to a multitool, it would be the Supertool. It's got big tools, it's simple and strong. If its tools were accessible from the outside like a Bear or Swisstool, it would be magnificent. I don't like the curved lock release on mine, though.

As everyone will know I love the supertool.  But I am not too keen on the lock on the 200 so I prefer the original one.

I have a LM Supertool 200. It's a great multi-tool and is, IMHO, STILL the "Big Daddy" of the multi-tool market. My biggest complaint is the already mentioned locking method. If you're working with grease and/or oil getting a blade unlocked can be a PITA. Other than that it's a beast. I actually "broke" mine once. I don't remember what I was cutting but it was WAY beyond what the tool was designed for. It was a "minor emergency" or something so I didn't have time to grab something else. The tool still did the job but the wire cutters were messed up. I sent it to Leatherman expecting to have to pay for the repair but they sent me a new one, FREE, within 10 days. Awesome tool, awesome customer service. I'd like to get a Core to compare the two.

I wouldn't mind giving the core a go, but I am not keen on those plastic handle inserts. :-\

Every time I use the ST200's lock, I get the feeling that Leatherman was desperately trying to figure out SOME way to unlock the tool without infringing on someone else's patent. The Swisstool's lock is svelte and smooth, SOG's lock is a neat take (I sometime wonder whether it would allow the tool to unlock with heavy torque, though), even my Gerber Legend's lock is better. Leatherman goes to all the trouble to try to design handles which are comfortable, then they put that serrated piece of lever in the handle! My ST lock, being over on one side, really doesn't have the leverage to easily unlock the tool, either. I much preferred the old ST.

I only have an old LM Supertool. For those who owmed both versions of the ST, which locking mechanism do you prefer?

I still like the ST200/Pulse lock mechanism better.  I think it was a great design that never reached it's full potential.

As I have said before, I prefer the original supertool style lock.  I own a Pulse and the lock is too awkward IMO to get off.  However, the Pulse type lock is a damn site safer as it is quite easy to catch your fingers in the original supertool (I like the element of danger  >:D).

The Core is really just a beefed up SuperTool with different locks and plastic inserts.  (Same overall length, similar tool selection)  Biggest improvement is the blade lock release.

Seems like an original Super Tool with Core-type locks would be ideal.

I agree that the original Supertool with Core type locks would be great. I don't really mind the plastic inserts except that they take up space. Why not just round the edges like the Pulse? Also, the new blade length is over 3" which makes it illegal in Atlanta. Bring back the original with the Core locks. Petition time.  :D

I prefer the original Supertool with the "open another tool to unlock the one you're using" to the curved slide unlocking apparatus my current tool uses. The original ST system was nothing fancy, but I think the ST200 slide lock is nothing to crow about, either. I think it's a marginal performing "unlocker" at best. Leatherman boasts about making the handles curved and comfortable, then they put that serrated piece of metal on one handle edge. Mine always feels like it's doing nothing until the last 10% of the curve when the tool suddenly unlocks. Still, Leatherman could have used a variation of Bear's lever unlocker-perhaps my vote for most obnoxious unlocker design on any of the tools I own. Still, I do LOVE the Supertool 200, warts and all.

SuperTool 200 vs. original SuperTool?
Reply #13 on: December 27, 2007, 02:02:10 AM
I own an original Leatherman SuperTool.  The SuperTool 200s displayed in local stores are in sealed packages and I cannot try them.

If one ignores the "new" lock mechanism on the 200, can you instead unlock the individual tools on the 200 using the same technique as on the original SuperTool?

If so, does the 200 have any disadvantages compared to the original SuperTool?  It looks fatter.

Thanks.

Yep, the 200 can be unlocked using the same technique as the original.

And yes, the 200 is fatter (because they rolled the edges of the handles to get a more comfortable grip) Otherwise the blades and tools are the same.

Thanks for the info.  Perhaps TJ Maxx will lower the price below $35.

Wow $35 seems like a good price.

Doesn't the original SuperTool have a regular (pointy) serrated blade and the ST 200 a sheepfoot serrated blade

TJ Maxx lowered the price on the SuperTool 200 w/nylon case to about $27 (US) when I returned today.

Is this at ALL TJ Maxx stores? Their website sucks so I can't find out anything on there.

I've only visited the closest TJ Maxx store.  The price sticker still said $34 so I asked the salesdroid to scan the bar code to find the reduced price.

OK, thanks. I may give the closest one a call today. I wasn't really in the market for another Supertool but at that price you can't pass it up.
