80's Survival Knife.

I found this at a local gun show. Yes, it is the ultimate 80's survival knife that I so wanted when I was a kid.

The original safety matches fell apart when I opened it. I had a few extras hanging about. The blade is surprisingly thick and sturdy on this. False courage considering there is little to no tang to its design.

What can I say other than I am tickled pink at adding one of the old survival knives to my ever growing hilarious Rambo style survival knife collection.

A little Leatherman information.

Awesome find! I remember seeing those in the back of Boys Life magazines when I was in the Scouts as a kid.  I wanted one so badly but could never quite convince my parents write the check for me.  Thanks for sharing!

Your parents sound about as wise as mine...I wanted one badly..and my parents said hell no! With hindsight being 20/20, they were quite right as I probably would have lost a limb or something.

I think there was a few versions of that type then. I saw a video where the matches were opened and worked.

420 Molecular stainless steel to boot.

That was a fun commercial.  Even back then they put bottle openers on every thing

Fun find. I had a knockoff first blood knife as a kid. Full size, black coated quarter inch thick blade, kind of like the ones you can still buy now, but it did not have the screwdrivers or the rope wrapped handle from the Lyle design. The handle was more like the $10 knife you picked up, KABAR style, with a compass at the end. It did not have a domed compass glass, but was flat. I enjoyed that knife a lot. None of my friends had a larger or more badass knife. LOL. Fortunately, my dad had a tool that allowed my to tighten the bolt inside the handle when it came loose, and while the knife lasted for a number of years, it ultimately broke in half while knife throwing...
I suppose that knife is why I still like Bowie knives.  :D

Great find! I see them around occasionally and picked one up awhile back.Although I can't vouch for the strength of the blade due to the very short tang, some survival style knives are actually quite strong in that respect having a one piece blade/tang combination but those are usually quite expensive.
I got a similar one awhile back that had of all things incorporated into it a folding slingshot! Hope you don't mind me posting it.

Even though I was born in 1989, and that ad is from 1985, I actually remember seeing ads for that (or maybe one similar to it) on TV Shop some time in the mid 90s here in Denmark.

I remember thinking that was the coolest thing ever and I wanted one sooooo badly.

Great find Dan  :salute:

Not too long ago a local shop got some of these in.......modern remakes and even worse quality.....unfortunately.

New old stock would be the way to go if you can find it.

My brother had one just like that Chako!  I haven't seen it (or another one like it) in 30 years.
That ad was a trip!!

I think almost every kid in the 80s either had one or wanted one. It was kind of a defining split Rambo vs MacGyver; Suvivor vs SAK

I can't see these without thinking of the Youtube parody that Preparedmind101 did a few years back...he even included an original TV ad.

What is worse is they are still bieng made, plastic handle, pleather sheath, and all. I almost bought one off Ross Clothing's misc mens junk rack just for laughs a couple years ago.

In case you were curious about the other survival knives in the collection...here is a 2014 post that contains the majority of my utterly ridiculous survival knife group.

Worse... thats the thread I added a rambling and probably incoherent dissertation on saw teeth.
I thought I dreamt it.
I hoped I dreamt it
Because if it existed it means I truly am a lost and crazy knife nut

(Ps I've known that for years)
