I tried looking for a thread but couldn't find one so i thought it's about time that we pay homage to the almighty (in my world at least) SOG Powerassist!

Cheers,

:multi: I agree... it does have it's shortcoming but for me it's like your own child - you'll still love the kid despite of it's faults. but sure is one helluva tough kid

The Power Assist was my first large SOG multi tool I purchased (Also the easiest to flip open.  For some reason, I cannot get my 2 Power Locks to flip open as smoothly as the Power Assist).

Hey SOGgers, where are all the Powerassists?

This thread is 5 years old!

But here’s mine...picked up today. NOS marked down. Not even the right box as not an EOD.

What’s your opinion of this tool? Kinda large?

SOG Poweassist is big, compares to SwissTool and Supertool 300:

PowerAssist 9.48oz
SwissTool 9.89oz
SuperTool 300 10.12oz

I noticed the plier tips are magnetized! Is this normal; anyone else notice this?  ???

that's a beefy one,  :like: a model I never had
My SOG tips are also magnetised but that's after years of carrying, I never tested them out of the box  :dunno:

Thanks TP, I’m enjoying the PowerAssist, but it’s a brute and quite quirky, fastest deploying blades but slowest deploying tools

I’ve done a short video showing it’s features here:

I normally rotate through Leatherman EDC but this SOG may just sneak in when I need some exercise.  :)

So I was not happy with the V-cutter catching the tin opener, so I swapped it around with the file. It now does not pull anything out with it. Not sure why SOG does not use this tool order from the factory.  :dunno:

Son of a smurf, you guys are right. The newer SOG pliers are like weak ferro magnets. :dunno:

A magnetic tape eraser works well for demagnetizing Stainless. A little technique for rotating the tool in the electromagnetic field and it is fixed.

There are some more home-brew ways to remove the magnetism, but the tape eraser has a ridiculously strong electromagnetic field and does the job in seconds.

Edit: If anyone gets one of the erasers, please keep it in a bathroom or somewhere away from electronics or metal particles. :ahhh

Good tip GLBM. I may struggle to find one of those vintage erasers my neck of the woods. May have a go at making my own electromagnet as a project.  :)

That sounds like a fun project. Should make a fantastic mod thread as well. :)

Working at an antiques/flea market store has me spoiled with finding odds and ends like a tape eraser. Even in the US, I rarely see them, because they were mainly for video-tape stores. :ahhh
