I really overlooked the Spirit.. I bought it because I had to have it and never used it.. But I don't see why i never did! It is light and has everything you would need- and even a really nice leather pouch! It will never change my EDC but it is a really nice tool!

Yes they are a very nice tool , the only thing I dont like is the blade . It would be ok if it had another blade aswell but on its own I find it lacking . But if you go for the S model you loose the scissors   Guess that why I always go with its bigger brother .

It is a truly great tool, and the only down side (with the S model) is the silly half serated blade (which I've modded on mine) other than that it's all the tool you could ever need :)

I have not yet seen and fondled any Swisstool. What particular model were you referring as "its big brother"? I am planning to buy one Swisstool within the 1st quarter of next year. What particular models are comparable in size and weight  with the Wave and Supertool? I want a model with scissors. Thanking you in advance, Dunc.

Dunc's cleared off for a while, so I hope you don't mind me answering in his place :)

In terms of size you should be looking at the Swisstool X, as it's the model that comes with scissors  :)

I've used my Swisstool X, for well over a year now, and despite the ocational hard use, it looks almost new!, no rust, no wear, and absolutely no problems with it whatsoever :)

Hope this helps mate :)

Basically you gain a serrated blade on the RS, but you lose the file :(, thats why I prefere the X as it has the most utility :)

The Swisstool X has a red marking on the handle while the RS has none. It that automotive acrylic paint?  Will it not easily peel off?

It will wear off eventually, but its pretty tough, certainly I've still got all the paint on mine :)

Duncs the one to ask though, as he's really put his swisstool's through the mill :o

All three models of the Swisstool has the red logo , Std , X , RS  . While the Spirit and Spirit S do not have the red logo .
btw the logo is only on one side , on the other side it has VICTORINOX cast into the metal .While MickyD prefers the X I favour the RS model , although I do own all the models .
Heres some pics for you .

Spirit

X model

This picture shows an RS with its tools open plus it gives you an idea of the size of the Spirit along side the Swisstools .

Here you can see the opposite side to the red logo

Forgot to say about the paint  ::)  Its quite tough but will start to chip after a while . I always keep mine in its sheath when not in use so it doesnt come into contact with anything metal in my pockets .My RS model thats seen some very heavy use only has a couple of scratches on the paint .

LM123- I am glad you are liking it.  Do you plan to add it to the EDC rotation or just as a plaything around the house?

I dunno, I always use the spirit for work, and the swisstool for everything else :)

But I work in a bookshop so it's hard to justify a wacking great tool on your hip :D

Is there a stock sheath out there for the Spirit with a snap instead of the velcro one?

How hard is to get at the Spirit tools (and for that matter, the Swisstool tools), with cold, wet, wrinkled, clammy hands?

I asked because I struggle at times with the Climber and Classic 50 SAKs

While I'm here (grasping for faults with the Vic Multis) - How tricky is it to pull out some one-handed butterfly opening on these?

You need a fingernail to get anything out, but they aren't as tense as some of the tools in a regular SAK...they seem to slide out easier on the Spirit.

Gloves, forget it. :P

I agree, not as difficult as a SAK.  I was surprised how easy the tools came out actually as you do hear about how some struggle to get at the tools but I have had no such problems.

The spirit is noticiably easier to get the tools out of than the bigger swisstool, certainly a lot easier than the inside tools on my LM charge are :)

I agree to an extent...  The backsprings aren't as strong on the the Spirit, so the tools are easier to pull out but, due to the tools being recessed, I find the thumbnail slots a bit harder to access than on a SAK.  I carry a SAK with inline phillips quite often, and the Spirit phillips is noticeably more difficult to access.

On my Spirit the resistance of the springs is less than my SAK's, however, there is a lot less room for your thumbnail. So I guess it averages out. Nothing too terrible though.
