Some portuguese nice folders.
on: October 02, 2011, 10:22:31 PM
Hi. Haven't seen here much references to portuguese cutlery (actually, haven't seen none).
These are good quality products, relatively cheap but have this big problem of not having much marketing. They're are to find and hard to get.

I'm trying to get a few samples to myself (I only have a smallish old one -- 6cm length closed, 4,5cm blade) and it's not easy.

Some links:

Other maker, on a traditional style:

Some samples:

classic style with a liner back added

ICEL knives are quite well known. I have a few in my kitchen. Good quality and good edge holding. :tu:

I was in Portugal a few months ago and tried to find some traditional Portuguese slipjoint/folding knives but all I could find was tourist knives made in China.

I did, in the end, buy some better quality ICEL kitchen knives, with metal handles, from a supermarket.

Neil, you have an eye for the expensive: that one is the pricier of the bunch :)

dks, nice pic. Just this afternoon I was somewhere on that picture's location (which isn't usual for me).
I have an ICEL kitchen knife set for about 7 years now, from a model which was discontinued meanwhile. Also have two wusthofs and a kai shun (with damasco steel). And a victorinox kitchen knife. But I haven't any folder. I'm tempted to order one or two of those with rosewood handles.

btw: if you want traditional (and cheap) stuff here you have to go to the fairs.

Ok, finally got two folders from ICEL. Turns out these are great quality products. Curiously, it seems they're somehow popular in Spain, where they are sold under a local brand.

I chose two from the same line up. The handle is made from brass with rosewood insertions. The finish is very good. There's no "feelable" indent on the handles, even on the wood-brass border or on the rivets.

Springs are pretty strong and they make a solid snap when closing or opening.
The little one seems to be slightly better build.

One thing annoying: they've used some kind of heavy oil which turned into gunk meanwhile. So the springs and pivots come pretty dirty out of the box.

Overall, good stuff on a good price. I would say the finish quality is on par with VIC.

Now time for my typical bad quality pictures.

I had something like one of these except with a tiny fork and it was mounted on a wood handle much like Opinel knives.

The little knife is very nice. I did not even know they make folding knives.
Being ICEL the quality of the steel should be pretty good too.
I have about 4 kitchen ICEL knives.
The fanciest one is a Loft fully metallic model, seen here in action

I should be in Lisbon for a few days next week so I would like to see if I can get some more local knives.

I should have some time to wonder a bit tomorrow evening, near the Aquarium area. I may or may not have more time later in the week.

I see that there is a Victorinx shop there, so maybe they will have some more knives/tools too.

Any other relevant shops in that area? e.g. Shopping centres?

I have been to the centre before and it was mainly touristy stuff, so I doubt I would find anything in the centre.

There are some good online stores:

Commerciol (traditional & artisanal portuguese knives + Opinel + Victorinox + ...)
http://www.commerciol.com/

MisterClass (Opinel + Victorinox + Muela)
https://www.misterclass.com/mrclass/default.aspx

In Lisbon you can find some traditional portuguese knives in hardware stores. I'll try to get some names/locations.

Not seen ICEL for some time. My main kitchen knife is a high carbon ICEL for more than ten years now. About four years back I came across a Casa Mania that are made in Portugal and look identical except these are polished not vertically brushed. Not bad, I prefer ICEL.

Nice. I'm spoilt by Opinel's Viroblock though. :tu:

A great discovery I found through your thread. I was not at all aware of these kinds of folding blades. I was unable to find much information on the internet regarding this so it will be good if you can provide us with more information like its origin, uses, sharpness of the blade.  :)
