that was a picture of the leaf spring which operates the sliding lever which locks the tools into place.

For the Spirit; On the back of the tang of each tool there is a notch, when the tool is extended there is a spring loaded plate that slide into the notch (shown in the picture Shamus posted).

The trick is that the shape of the tang is such that when the tools are close there is no contact with the plate so it free to slide and sits fully forward, unless one pulls on the release.  As the tool is opened it makes contact with the plate pushing it back (as if pulling on release), until extended when it is then free to move forward again, but this time into the notch which prevents the tool from closing until the plate is extracted.

If it was making any sense you may have picked up on another way to release the lock?  Just open a second tool 1/4-3/4 open because as it opens it need to push the lock place back.  so when switching tools you may sometimes find it easier just to open the new tool part way, close the existing tool and then continue to open the new tool.

I should have an image of a Spirit (exploded view) that may help you understand how the lock works. I think I found it on Google Patents

But that's no SwissTool, it's not even assigned to Victorinox ;)

This should be the correct patent as ascribed Multiple function tool Carl S. Elsener et al Swiss army brands Inc June 2001
