THE SHAVING THREAD!!!!!!
on: October 05, 2011, 07:46:01 AM
I am a disposable razor kind of guy, but have been thinking of giving a straight razor a try. Anyone here shave with one? Any recommendations or tips if I decide to go that route?

I sometimes use a straight razor, but dispoables when I am in a hurry. I recommend a Dovo Shavette. It has disposable razor blades, but is used like a straight razor. Most barbers here use them, for they are always sharp with a fresh blade, no need to sharpen them. Sharpening a straight razor to get best results is not for everyone, so maybe the quits cheap shavette is a better way to try and learn.

I'm a safety razor user - the double edged blade kind. I haven't used disposables for many years. I keep promising myself I'm going to get the courage together to try a straight razor. I think I might feel better starting out with the straight/dispoable first for the reasons mentioned (cheap and guaranteed edge quality) - thanks Woz  :salute:

I use a safety razor from the German company Mühle and been using it for almost a year now and I love it. But I am thinking more and more of giving straight razor a try

Kenneth, that's a nice looking safety razor; it's pricey, though. o.o  I have ten (or so) Gillette safety razors that I picked up on the cheap (nine of them were $1.20 each; the last one or two were slightly more, maybe $5 most) that I still need to clean up.  I know they aren't as shiny as a Merkur or the Mühle, but they should shave just as well.  :tu:

[Edit:  I still use my Gillette Fusion Quattro simply because I still have a couple spare razor cartridges remaining.  The two or three I have should last for another year or so.]

Normally I use two passes: 1st with a straight razor and the 2nd with one of those fancy shaving safety razors, currently a mach3. I've found out that doing this makes the "fancy" razor last much longer.

exactly the same here.  It's been years since I've used a multi-bladed disposable razor.  Despite what the advertising says I actually found that they gave me horrendous razor burn, not a problem I have with a simple safety razor.

I'm also a fan of a good old fashioned brush and block of shaving soap.  I've tried all the oils, gels and foams, but a good bit of badger bristle is hard to beat. :D

Did you ever try a good one, something in the $100 to $200 range?
Or even one of those new sub-$100 ones with the shave gel built in?

I'll have to get some pictures, but most are the butteryfly opening double edged safety razors, though I do have a couple standard and one travel fixed-cap double edged Gillettes, too.

If you don't mind paying for whatever shipping costs, I'd let you have one of mine for $1.50.  That's a couple cents more than what I have in it. :tu:  It'll obviously need a bit of cleaning, but I can direct you to The Art of Manliness' suggested cleaning method. :)

I've been using Gillette safety razors for the last 20 years...
I started with Gillette Sensor, than Sensor Excell, Excell 3, Mach 3, Mach3 Turbo etc
Now I'm using Gillette Fusion Power Phenom.
I tried using electric shavers, but they are not good for me.

That is a bargain for a original Gillette razor, if I was you I would take him up on that offer.

But if you want a new razor I can recommend this UK seller http://www.shaving-shack.com/ I only buy from this store and I am extremely happy with the service that I get there, if you buy anything over 9£ or something you get a free gift.

I typically see them anywhere from $5+ at various flea markets and antique shows. *shrug*  The only one I paid more than $3 for was the travel razor; all of the others ranged from $1.20 to $3 each.

Also, if anyone can tell me who the three figures' names are in the second picture, cookie for you. :tu:

Straight razor?

No, man. HELL NO. I'll never good enough to use one.Heck, when straight razors were the only way to shave, you went to a barber. The average joe would wind up slitting his throat if he tried it himself.

I just use a Mach3. Maybe If  I wanted to rock it old school, I'd use a safety razor.

But if you really want to be old school, grow a beard.

I shave my entire head and the majority of my face(minus the chin) every day with a Gillette Mach 3, in the shower with no shaving cream.  I never get razor burn at all under normal conditions, and if it's really hot out I will alternate days and shave every other day to avoid a slight burn that comes from sweating too soon after shaving.

I have always wanted to try a straight razor, but I don't really know how to use one.   :P
