I have always wanted to try a straight razor, but I don't really know how to use one.   :P

Me too  :-[

I asked my barber one time, before he retired, to teach me how to and he said "I barely passed barber school because I couldn't ever get the knack of shaving, you don't want me teaching you"

That being said, I have given myself a quick shave with a knife at times, when camping or what have you. But nothing ever close to what an experienced person can do, when they leave your skin feeling like a baby's bottom.

I searched calgary for a barber who would give me a real shave but to no avail.  Apparently they aren't insured to practice straight blade shaving anymore. I could shave twice a day my beard grows so fast.  Currently just using Gillette fusion after evening shower, dont use shaving cream very often but if I do I've been using straight up aloe Vera gel, cheap and works great.

That's a shame. I've always wanted a straight razor shave in calgary. Why not just got full bush man! :)

I hesitate to learn to use a straight razor on my head.  I envision massive blood loss.   :ahhh

When I first started shaving my head a few years ago, I was prone to "accidents" involving three neat incisions on the back of my head.  They bleed something fierce.

That looks neat!

A little retailer search and I found that we have a seller in my town.  I may head over later and check it out!

It's all Kenneths fault!! I've just ordered one of those shavette jobbies and an alum block. Luckily I've recently got some superglue off Neil through EDCSource so I can reattach anything that falls off.

Ironic that the Medic is the one who is instigating self administered facial lacerations really

Schick Hydro 5.  My mom's a doctor, and for some reason a rep showed up one day and unloaded like 50 single-package samples on the office.  She gave me 10.  Should last me years.

On the other hand, I do use shaving soap and a proper chromed badger bristle brush.  My wife bought it for me and it's very nice to use.  Very nice on the skin.

I tried a Schick Hydro 5 for the first time a week or so ago and it has been working out well. Seems like it does not irritate my face as much as other razors.  :tu:

My wife bought me a straight razor that used disposable inserts and even though they were nice and sharp I found the head wasn't weighted enough to glide over my skin properly. Man I ended up looking like I go tin a fight with freddy krueger. From the research I have done it seems like you need to have good weight in the blade and also stretching your skin is pretty key. As much as I like the idea of a straight shave I hate shaving as a whole and lean to whatever is quickest.

When I was younger my roommate had a electric razor and I really enjoyed using it to shave my balls  >:D

Thanks for the tips - and remind me never to leave my shaving tackle anywhere you can get at it  :P

If I manage to get the hang of it without needing stitches, I might end up feeling like a baby's bottom but I'll still look like a baboons bottom

Even though I am older now I still have to admit there is nothing funnier than watching someone shave knowing where their razor has been. :-)

Just came across this and found it kinda funny. Makes me feel like a little girl for being concerned about using a safety razor. Wait a minute that is a little girl. Alright I feel like a big baby.

Obviously there is no blade in there but I found it funny.

So I was talking to someone on another forum about the Safety Razors I picked up and he might of convinced me to use one of them.  :ahhh I guess its a good way to find out if I want to spend the money on a new safety razor or say screw it and keep shaving with disposables.

A little tip for you youngsters

I was told years ago if you use an electric razor, shave before you wash as the hairs are stiff

If you wet shave, shave after your bath/shower as the steam will soften the hairs, (but you won't be able to see in the mirror   ::) )

Good luck Guys  :salute:

Did any of you see the "The 1900 House" show? I was reminded how the father couldn't get the hang of the straight razor, and the historian told him that most professional gentlemen from the era would stop at the barber daily for their shave. He was so happy after that.

That was a good series, except for them picking a family with a mother who was a vegetarian and hated the idea of household servants. Really took away from the authenticity...
