I think I need a Core
on: November 05, 2006, 04:26:06 AM
After reading about the issues with the Core and everyone chiming in with their views, I am starting to think that maybe I am the last person in the world without one.  I think I need to get one.  What does everyone else think?

Snag one?  Get something else?

Hehe... I don't have one.  So you're not the last person in the world without one.

The problem I have is I don't know what LM model to get.  I want the Surge for sure, but would also like something smaller.  I want a Spirit also, but am holding back for if/when the Forum multitool orders start.

I like the Core.  All the screwdrivers have a good long reach. The blades are long. The pliers are the same big strong ones found on the Surge and the saw is also good too.  I really don't have a huge issue with the pliers tip getting jammed. If you just open the one handle that you want the tool from then it's not really a problem.  In fact I used my Core for a while and never realized the design problem till it was brought up on this forum. Overall I think the Core is on of the better tool out right now.

Anyone have any likes/dislikes worth mentioning?

Prime, I agree with each and every point you made above.

The Core doesn't really have anything "new" about it. Instead, it is just a good combination of all the right features a large tool needs.

When getting the Core and opening the tools for the first time most people have a tendency to open the tool all the way and look at the tools. Now that I know NOT to open it all the way to access a tool it not an issue, but still annoying. I observed three different walmart employees open the Cores and do the same thing I did. I think it is instinct to open it all the way.. I also have a tendency to forget how to magically access the tools when focussed on getting something done.

Other than that I really love the Core and is my choice tool when I have some real "man" work to do. If I was in constuction, tile, carpet, auto, plumber ect this is the tool I would carry. The tools are very easy to access as well with gloves.

Think of it this way. When carrying a handgun for self defense you would choose a smaller pistol or revolver. When you know trouble is coming you reach for the shotgun. ;) Thats the Core.

Your problem with it is one of the reasons I feel the need to get one.  It's hard to picture exactly what you are talking about without having one to fiddle with myself.

That's my excuse...

That sounds like a good excuse to me.  I think I need one now for "research purposes."

Glad to see that you share my professional interest in this particular issue.  I feel it's our duty to investigate these issues for the benefit of the multitool buying public.

That's the nice thing about them all looking the same- all chromed or brushed steel, occasionally a black one here and there... Non tool people usually can't tell the difference- that's why the Juice models are so dangerous!  My wife would notice a new purple one kicking around!

I think I have managed to convince myself not to buy a Core... at least not yet.  The cure may be worse than the disease however since the only way I could put it off was to buy an XE6 and a Pocket Power Plier.

Oh, and three SAKs.

And I will probably end up buying the pruner within the next week too.

But after that I'll probably end up buying the Core simply because I can't afford the treatments!

Def,
You really should get the Core, irregardless of what I said. The thing is the bomb even with the design flaw.

I just retruned the one I got back from LM to Walmart and got a brand spaankin new one that I will not open up all the way when taking out the medium screwdriver. If you do this to yours, it will get all scrathced up the first time it gets stuck. I am keeping mine in PRISTINE condition...

..well, at least until I use it as a hammer. :(

I am quite certain I will get a Xore, and probably will sooner rather than later... perhaps I should have said I am not going to get a Core next!

As long as you don't have a Core you have a excuse to get other tools.

"If I get this then I don't have to get a Core"

So by getting a Core you will no longer have an excuse and have to stop buying tools. Don't do it man!

Your will is stronger than mine.  Every time you guys start talking about another tool that I don't have I get that want lust.  I'm still trying to keep the new LM Charges out of my mind.
