I think it is funny, but the trouble is that you see so little of the product that is advertised,

What is really strange is going back to the Wingman page, the trading cards (photo selection) vanished and was reset with the old standard stuff. /boggle

Deja Moo?

I did sent the Wingman a request. Asked what he did with the Bionic Lobster; if he ate it, or it's out in his backyard swimming hole pro'tectin' his babes?

Well I can't possibly buy one now, LM might think I like their silly advert. ::)

So who carries a Wingman?  Only inbred, out of date smurfs, that's who.  At least that's the message I get from that ad.

Humm, utter idiot or cool (and helpful) biker?  Which one would you want to associate yourself with?

the bike ad is better, its funny and concise, and the tool itself is featured. I find the Wingman concept funny, but a bit too drawn out and seem to forget about the tool - all he does with it is open a few beers.

I'm a saddo ... I actually boycott products with crap annoying adverts. Unfortunately I wasn't going to buy one of these before anyway so I don't have the pleasure of boycotting this now  :P

Oh me too.  I move my breakdown cover to the RAC after the AA started their "to our member's we're the fourth emergency service" slogan.

I dunno... Unless you're already a member of this forum, multitools just aren't sexy. How do you promote a product that most people don't get excited about? Always having a handy tool just in case does not get you the girl unless you have literally just saved her life with it. My wife always just rolls her eyes when I come to rescue with a pocketknife/multitool, even when she'd be inconvenienced if no one had a tool handy. I got her a Juice XE6 and she completely forgot about it.

I mean, eye-catching, mildly amusing, and slightly annoying might be just about as good as it gets.

That said, I still liked the lobster better...

That's the worst part- the cheesy 'stache and the new slogan "Leave Nothing Undone" seems like a lower class Debbie Does Dallas kind of thing.

You know if it was just a little bit cheesy, it wouldn't be so bad.  I'm thinking a tongue-in-cheek spoof on the MacGyver idea would be kinda funny, but this guy's just a smurfhead that would make you run away screaming if he offered you 'help'. ::)

Whenever I see the pictures of the "Wingman," I think of Chris Hanssen stepping out from around the corner and asking the guy to sit down for a chat. >.>

Don't think it will help, response has been positive on facebook, so we appear to be in the minority.

As a matter of fact, "Wingman" has replaced Juli for the next few weeks on FB:

From Juli:
"GONNA STEP AWAY FOR A BIT :: Hey folks...Gonna be stepping away for a bit here to let someone new take a crack at the page. If you haven't already heard the rumblings and seen some of the first shots being posted here...The Wingman has arrived."

Wingman:
"Wingman's got this!!!
Everyone remain calm!!! This Facebook page isn't messed up... The Wingman is here. That’s right, amigo – me and the new Wingman tool from Leatherman. Sometimes a bro needs help with important stuff. You know, fixing things that need fixing. Lady problems. Whatever it is Wingman's got this. So for the next few weeks I'll be the B.I.C around here. That’s right, the Bro in Charge.
"

Huh?  ???  What do you mean multitools aren't sexy??

I know, the Bionic Lobster was more entertaining. All it needed was a toupee & a bro-stache right?

Hello, this is my first post on this forum. My name is Tor and I am from Sweden. Glad to be here!

I think the advert is spot on for what it wants to be. The target group for the Wingman and Sidekick are men and women in their late teens. The image language is spot on. Think GIF.s, 4chan, internet-memes etcetera. Nothing's cooler or more contemporary than badly done Photoshop imagery or home made YT-uploads.
Aesthetics? Check. Semiotics? Check.

For young urban generations the classic male role of do-it-yourself handyman is something of times past.

Therefore the ad adapts what I think is clever irony in playing with that gender role and it's connotations. The advert is not made to make us buy multi-tools, we'd buy them anyway. The advert want's to play with or have a dialogue around the geekiness of carrying a Leatherman. And I think it does it beautifully adapting a classic male stereotype a la Miami Vice or perhaps Top Gun.

Do I think it's funny? No I don't. But the ad is not meant for me. Do I think it's a good advert? Yes, I think it's great. Good job Leatherman!

Thanks for reading. Best regards / kinskibrain

Notice that guy's jaw when he's in the car (video)? Looks like he's either got a huge wad of chewing tobacco in there, or he's been infused with grasshopper genes.

Pull back the bro-tennas, add a toupee, a bro-stache. hmm... might work?
