What beauties!  How do you guys find the Japanese-specific made tools when you search for them?  I'd love to add one to my collection.

When perusing LM PSTs (eg on ebay) look for rivets rather than the regular knurled screws that the made in USA PSTs all have. The v5 JPST is reasonably common (there are several on offer on US ebay at the moment), the V3 and V4 variants are less common.

Thanks Greg!  I love the PST's and am always looking for something new to add.  I'd love to pick up a Japanese black oxide model...two birds with one stone!

Good Luck !  You'll need it, BO JPSTs are quite rare - as in the only one I know of anywhere is the one Vladimir has, and I've been collecting PSTs for a few years now.

Yep, only one I've ever seen. And what a pristine example .

I've never even seen a US Black Oxide PST, so I can only imagine trying to find a Japanese model.  I'd be happy with the conventional finish, believe me!

There are plenty of BO US PSTs around, they are quite often offered for sale on eBay.  They were made with regular and cap crimper pliers.  Mine (BO US PSTs) are dated between 1993 and 2003, so they were made for quite a long time.

How long were the PST made in Japan?
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

How long were the PST made in Japan?

From the Chronology thread

3] Late 1985 – early 1989 Made in Japan concurrently
•   Riveted construction
•   Hollow base rivets
•   No lanyard attachment
•   Small diameter plier pivot
•   Staked plier pivot
•   Only LEATHERMAN cast into plier pivot
•   No hard wire cutter notch
•   One handle stamped: LEATHERMAN TOOL, US PAT 4238862, PORTLAND OR
•   Other handle stamped POCKET SURVIVAL TOOL
•   Inch ruler only, no metric
•   No date codes
(Note some Japan tools appear to have handles obtained from the same source as some USA tools)
•   Drop point knife blade
•   Knife tang stamped LEATHERMAN JAPAN
•   Milled awl blade
•   Off center screwdrivers pivot IN
•   Can opener has left hand cut
(Note Japan tools appear to have several of their blades obtained from the same source as USA tools)

4] Changes to tools produced in Japan:
•   Solid base rivets
•   Lanyard attachment added
•   One handle stamped: LEATHERMAN in large font. Also stamped TOOL, US PAT 4238862 (no PORTLAND OR)
•   Other handle left blank

5] Still more Japanese changes:
•   US PAT 4238862 replaced by REG’D TM 1325473
•   Can opener has right hand cut

Mirror, Mirror on the wall,
Who's the largest Font of all?

Guess I've been lucky lately. Karma finally paid off. ;) 2 Large font J-PST's, and (I believe, a very early) Pocket Survival Tool with the thin-headed fasteners and no Lanyard attachment. Think one sheath is probably original to the tool too. Neither J-PST has Japan stamped on the blade tang.
