OK, Wenger lovers need a bit of info.

When did the Wenger corkscrew change?

The older ones were a bit thicker and the turns were different too.

Sorry, I don't know when the change was made.
Perhaps North Man could answer.
By the way, I just wished they never replaced the old type "5 turns" corkscrew. It was smaller in diameter, and fitted much better the knife, in my opinion.

Hey wenger lovers, i am a big wenger fan by the way, has anyone seen this variation of the alinghi before? I couldnt find it in the wiki by the alinghi name at least.

http://www.swissmade.com/en/shop/image_popup.php?id=5943

It says it was developed for the alpine club but it looks like it would be one early alinghi prototype because of the new ranger blade, scales and safety lock but with the old ranger pliers and small inline phillips and the old alinghi small flat screwdriver. It has a cool engraving on the blade too.

You can get it here (for a pretty high price) http://www.swissmade.com/en/web/index.php?id=1678&s=alpine_club_-_ranger_knife

That alpine club set is very beatiful  :tu:

Here is a small display case which is the second piece in the "forbidden word" series.  I'm guessing this display was put together by the US importer Precise because the knife in the top right is from Japan and has their imprint advertising on the blade.

They will not be sold separate but only as a set, much work put into them!

That University of Michigan scale is pretty sweet.  You should find a knife for it, unless it's broken.
I'm very jealous.

I hope it is ok i post this info :tu:

2013 is a very special year for the WENGER brand.
For a start, we are celebrating our 120th birthday.
It is also the last year in which WENGER knives are
being produced. To mark this occasion, we
decided to design a very special and exclusive 2013
sets limited collection that highlights and
impressively demonstrates the innovation and
globality of the WENGER brand.

probarbly it is 2013 pieces made, not sure. My info say they will be available in October.

Very nice set :tu: but too expensive  !

I think we should find the same (but cheaper) on other websites store in Germany or in Switzerland.

Yes it is on the expensive side,  probably the collectable value on these will be very high in the near future.

I think this will be a very nice set.  The information I have says there are 2013 sets.   I'd sure LOVE to have number 13 or number 1  :ahhh.  The marketing images looks pretty good and the box looks really nice as well.

Those are VERY nice.  There is a picture of some old Wengers in the SAK-OM book, but I think the timeline one has at least the first two knives on the left in the wrong order.  What do you think?

With informations I have (from Wenger, catalogs and others sources) I think it's the good order, but... Nobody can be absolutly sure.

Lot of Wenger timeline we can find on the web and some time in books are wrong so we have to read it carfully...

But if you have more informations about this period I would be pleased to know them.

If you mean the Evolution of Wengers on page 43:  the second one with the weird plastic shield has stainless steel blades so it is likely that the first one, with carbon steel, is older. But yeah, Wenger history, what with the devastating factory fire of 1986, records lost, is hazy at best.

Yes that's the picture I was referring to. I think I have that shield on a knife with carbon blades, black fiber handles, and a very old tool (threaded drill bit), but let me check again as I've been too busy to pay close attention to my SAKs.  What is the length of the knife in the picture?

Does anyone know the name of the tool that looks like a course threaded drill bit? It's quite common on very old pocket knives from other manufacturers, but I don't have a name for it.

@ICanFixThat & J Mackrel Jones

Hello gentlemen,

The length of the first knife is 90 or 91 mm and length of the second knife is 80 mm.

I have the same doubts as you for these 2 knives and I have also read the page 43 of the book "The Swiss Army Knife Owner's Manual" by Michael Young witch is a very good book.
So I can only bring more informations :
- For these 2 knives, blades are in stainless steel (not carbon steel)
- It seems, but it is not sure, that Wenger has used stainless steel as early perhaps in 1915 or 1919 so before Victorinox (1921 or 1923 according to speSmurfpillsts)
- In a catalog "Wenger & Co" dating from 1908 to 1922, we can already see the logo of the first knife handle, but not the logo of the 2nd  knife. (I'm sorry I can't post pictures on this forum because of a copyright)
- The first knive is stamped "Wenger Tahara" with the 3 faces triangle logo of "Coutellerie Suisse", the second is only stamped "Wenger Tahara".
For these reasons I have assumed that the first knife would be a bit older than the second.

I have also an old "Coutellerie Suisse" with carbon steel blades and only a 3 faces triangle stamp on the blade but without logo on handles, I guess we can estimate its dating between 1910 and 1920 :

With Wenger it is difficult to locate only with carbon steel or stainless steel, because it seems that the use of these two steels continued into the 1950s for some other knives as the third and fourth knife pictures, whitch year is identified by the stamp : 1951.

I suppose also that the logos on handles of the 2 first knives were produced over a same period of overlap, it can be 5 or 10 years, but I am pretty sure that the origin of the 1st logo is prior to the 2nd, because of the catalog "Wenger & Co".
