I had developed quite a crush on the S14 soft touch, but after what Karl said about the handle covering, I'm not so enthusiastic about possibly getting one after all.

I love my PER Ranger 179 though... I really wish it had a pair of those nice big scissors that Wenger makes for the one, and only one, Ranger model that has them.

My 179 and my new Juice CS4 I got in a trade with the Captain live on my adventure pack; there is some tool redundancy between them, but for what I use that pack for, I think having the saw and awl on the CS4 will be nice as back-up for the same tools on the 179.

The RangerGrip 90 is also a darn  worthy piece of kit, as is the Mike Horn model, but I can't honestly see myself carrying something that big, even if I could afford it!   :ahhh

Just in. Wenger Left Hand Evo 14.

Are they readily available?  I had thought all the left-handed Wengers were discontinued long ago.

It's available from 'Lefty's', a left-hand supply store in San Francisco.

I have two of the Tactiles; a 7-blade blue-grey version, and an 8-blade black version. Both have a main clip blade like the ones on the SwissBucks. The actual handle material appears to be a very thin neoprene layer applied to a standard red plastic handle, which is visible on the underside where it overlaps. I doubt it would hold up very well.
Nice! I just got the 3 layer traveler with clip point it has metallic blue shadow grass scale; essentially I think it is the same as your grey one, but in blue.

What's the equivalent Wenger model with the standard blade compared to your 8 blade one?

It's a 'Handyman / Classic 18', with saw, scissors, phillips and nail file.

The knife is basically a Traveler. If you're looking for something with a clip blade, you might keep an eye out for a SwissBuck Swiss Advantage.

Failing that, pick up an S14 soft touch and let us know how it holds up.  :D

Thanks for the info!   :tu:  The clip point is a big part of the appeal of the knife for me; never had such a beastie before.

The clip blade was originally developed for the SwissBuck line ( #1) that Wenger made for Buck some years back. Wenger apparently has some left over as they show up on Wengers from time to time. In addition to the the Tactiles (#2), there was a special model made for the Alpine Club of Switzerland that included a clip blade (#3).

I REALLY want the Minathor... but I'm having a hard time justifying it.  It's just so 'different' I'd love one to play with, just not sure it I want to spend $130 to have a toy.  But it looks cool though! :D

Keep an eye on ebay. The one I had TattooSteve customize was picked up for around $80.

Had this over on the Wenger thread where it went largely unnoticed.

A special model for the Alpine Club of Switzerland.

Karl,
that is a superb SAK, it was not unnoticed.
I usually collect only Wenger's from the 90-95 time period, but I like it!
In fact, after reading your post, I ordered one for myself from Edelweiss! ;)
Edit: just got an email: out of stock

An odd Fly Fisherman?
Reply #220 on: October 02, 2012, 02:09:46 PM
Hello,
does anybody know something about this knife?
As you can see it has the very same configuration of the Fly Fisherman, but with the Backpacker figure on the scales.
I searched every catalog available, but I couldn't fing anything.
Interesting to note is that I was not able to find any model with the Backpacker figure on the scales without the slot for the tweezers

I have pictures of the Fly Fisherman (also Fisherman and Fisherman 19) with plain handles, a fishing fly, a trout, and a stylized fish. None with a backpacker. However some were sold without tweezers and toothpick, and some only with the tweezers. Your's may be for a specific market, or ordered by a certain retailer.

hi
i do not have 100% info on this, i know this usually got a fish on the scale, both the older type logo/icon or the pad print type, however i have seen the backpacker icon on many models and without the slot, so far as i know "if not a person that have changed the scale i would say a variation",....

further

in the 1991 catalogue you see the fly fisherman with fly hook icon, this can also have the fish trout icon and also the old type and pad print like mine, mine have tweezer and not toothpick :)with euro number 1 19 25 fisherman , so this model got variations, and i have seen like i mentioned many backpacker Wengers....

Hello!
Thanks for the pictures.
I have exactly the same model as yours (with the trout), mine also has only the tweezers and not the toothpic.
I believe that in Europe it was probably the only variation of the "fly fisherman" sold , as I couldn't find any reference about the fly hook icon.
I do have, also, in my collection the variation with the fly hook icon (bought from the USA), and it is an old model, as the icon is embossed and not print on the scales, plus the fish scaler does not have the "oval line guide".
I will try to post a picture as soon as possible.

Ok,
nice to see that there are more Wenger fans!
Attached are two pictures.
On the top is the Fly Fisherman (old model). Forgot to mention in my previous post that is has also the old corkscrew (with more "turns") and is missing the patent pend. inscription on the cap lifter.
I added to the bottom a very similar model, 1 19 03. It is basically the US Master Fisherman but with the corkscrew instead of the Phillips. Just noticed that this one, also, is missing the "oval line guide" on the fish scaler.

from research and my knives it seemes the embossed icon with silvery color was done from late 70s and to early mid 80s, after this they started with pad print style plus minus some years maybe....

Yes, sure.
I uploaded the pictures on the SAKWiki Gallery.
I think they are just too big, as I forgot to resize them.
I can't find a way to delete and re-upload the pictures.
I will ask ICanFixThat.

I think they are OK since 3 per image; just prevents them from being included on a particular detail page.  I think under special editions though I put a place holder for a left-handed models page.  These images could for the basis of that.  Ya, I think we need a page dedicated to the left handers.  I'll try to get a picture of my recent one since I'm playing with my dSLR right now making it second nature to me like a trusty SAK.

Due to my continuing foot issue, making the odds of my hacking an airstrip out of the jungle less likely.  I have been carrying the Yellow Evogrip18 instead of my leathermans.  It has the "tools' I need/use, and is much lighter to carry :sak:

Bought a couple and took a picture of the display of the shop. Good selection.
