It's a little more complicated !

In fact soldiers knives and civilian knives, of same model and same year of manufacture, have always something to distinguish them :

A civilian knife will always have something more or less if you compare it with a real soldier knife of the same year like a bail added, a blade not stamped with the year of manufacture, the Waffenkontrolle not stamped on the scales, etc...
And it's not easy to transform a civilian knife to a soldier knife : for exemple in 2007 you can find standard issue stamped "07" with eyelet and bail but... In 2007 on soldiers knives you will never find eyelet nor bail ! So do not imagine if you remove the bail a standard issue will become a soldier knife !
And there are a multitude of combinations!

Lot of people have lot of wrong or bad informations about soldiers knives, Wenger standard issue, former Victorinox pioneer, etc... But soldiers knives collectors can recognize immediately a civilian and a soldier knife...

I'm sorry for my bad English I hope you understand what I mean !

An other sample :
(Image removed from quote.)
these knives can't be soldiers knives because soldiers knives models 1908 have carbon steel blade and tools ! Never stainless steel blade nor tools !

Sample of the Trekker :
(Image removed from quote.)

(Image removed from quote.)  (Image removed from quote.)

The Trekker is the civilian version of the model 2008 : No year stamped on the blade, no military handles...

Thanks for all the information. I have a model 2008 with Swiss Shield military scales that have no T&T, and "16" on the tang. Other than the year on the tang it looks identical to the 2008 model you show.

This goes a bit OT, but I've also got this 2005 Vic that I've presumed to be a "Soldier" as it has the Swiss Shield scales with a waffle pattern a little different from the Pioneer, no keyring, and "05" stamped on the tang. Didn't notice the waffle pattern difference until I put it next to a Pioneer; it's subtle. The blade, however, is etched with the signature of "Charles Elsener" which makes believe it was a special build in 2005 of a limited number of the 1961 model v7 for sale to collectors. I don't believe the Swiss military would issue knives with an etched signature on the blade to new enlisted soldiers.

Thanks!

John

Since 2008 to 2016 all soldiers knives are te same with the tang engraved 08, 09, ... 16, etc...
Except for 2010 with :

- 1 standard run (like other 2008 models)

- 1 special run "Swisscoy"

- 1 special run laser engraved “Swiss Army” in German, French and Italian language

This goes a bit OT, but I've also got this 2005 Vic that I've presumed to be a "Soldier" as it has the Swiss Shield scales with a waffle pattern a little different from the Pioneer, no keyring, and "05" stamped on the tang. This seems to be a commemorative knife, on the wiki it's indicated "In the years 2003 and 2005 some models were produced with Charles Elsener's signature etched on the main blade. The majority of these, if not all, were originally included in a package with the book A Collector's Companion."

In this case it's sure that it is not a real soldier knife but a pioneer !

On lot of aloxes (civilian or military knives) you can find subtle differences like you saw on the waffle pattern, due of tints of ink or machine adjustments or something else...
To understand these small differences, less and less visible now because of the evolution of industrial processes, you should visit the Victorinox Factory in Ibach ! On former productions lot of manual operations still exist !

Here's a rather old (probably 1940s-1950s from the shape of the shield), rather rare Wenger with imitation tortoise shell handles. While small tortoise shell knives show up fairly regularly, full size ones are extremely uncommon.

Love my Wengers. In some ways more than my Vics. Was literally sad when i heard Vic bought them out and would be melded into a Victorinox line. That said, Vics knives are topnotch quality and i understand why people may prefer them over a Wenger counterpart.
