What bothers me about most Wenger SAKs is the ubiquitous nail file.
I am fine with it being on a small 58mm knife that I'm gonna use mostly for manicure, but on a bigger knife, the idea of removing the gunk underneath my nails with the nailfile tip, to have then said nailfile resting 1mm next to the blade which I'm going to use to cut up an apple 10 minutes later is not a very appealing one.

Ok, rant over.  :P

I've owned a SAK since I was a child but never a Wenger :o Today that has changed as a Wenger EVO S13 showed up in the mail. I've recently developed a fondness for 84mm Vics. The size just seems right. My latest is a Walker, which I have been carrying for a couple of weeks. I like it a lot as it disappears in the pocket but it does leave me wishing it had a couple more tools. What I really want is a Sportsman with a saw or a Camper Small but I'm too busy at the moment to be doing any modding. So that led me to consider an 85mm Wenger (1mm can't make that much difference I thought). I have to say, having played a bit with this Wenger, there is a lot to like about it. I prefer the blade shape over Vic's and the locking feature is nice. The locking flat head is pretty cool. The can opener looks like it will perform well and the sharpened end looks like it could be useful for other cutting, scraping and carving tasks. While at first glance I assumed that the awl wouldn't drill a hole in wood, I tried it and it does but requires a bit more force and time. I'm considering sharpening it a bit though for better performance. The size and weight, 2.25 ounces, is great in a pocket. The contoured scales do add a bit of grip. The tip of the nail file doesn't work well as a 2D phillips and I'm considering grinding it down to make it fit better. But all in all I can see this becoming a regular carry item as I'm quite happy with it :tu:

Yep I always like the Wengers too.
As you say, the locking blade and SD are great, and the can opener sharpened edge is really handy - not just for opening cans.
And sometimes you want a non-sharp awl pointy thing - when you do not want to cut what you are poking, so I like that tool too as-is.
I also really like the nail file, and am going to try a bit of re-profiling on that, to see if I can make it better for Phillips (never understood why Wenger never did this as standard) - as they even have a flat Phillips in place of the NF on some models, although not too common, but why not combine the two ???
I like the Wenger scissors - But I am leaning towards the Vics now - Mainly as they seem to handle my nails better - All other tasks they are equivalent.

So I was sorry that Wengers were never as popular as Vics - and it was sad to see them go - But I would have done the same if I was Vic!!

PS. I also loved all their whacky SAKS with unique tools like the ski and roller blade adjusters, sewing machine tools etc etc

I have done side by side comparisons of the Victorinox and Wenger awls on the cellidor models. there is hardly any difference at awl for hole making

Yes, I thought the evolution series are a sort of hybrid. It was my understanding the awl and the can opener are from Vic where the scissors, blade, nail file and locking cap puller flat blade are holdovers from Wenger.
I have to admit I am really loving my evo14. So much so I want to get another but can't decide between the grip 14 or the S14. I think the locking blade might be a nice feature to have. Wish it came with the dual composite grips as well.

I agree with you. But I prefer the Wengers awl, because it's more powerful I think, more difficult to hurt yourself while working, a piece of wood it sews very well.
For some materials you need more strength to apply, but no need to worry about accidental contact with key ring.
Peace. Work. May.

Just ordered an Evolution S14. I guess it's not truly a Wenger, but as close as one could get these days buying new.

Anyway, last week I was at a store where they sold some SAKs.
A few of those were the S14, S11 etc but not the Vic Delemont, but actual NOS Wengers at regular retail price.
Would you guys think they're worth the money more then a Vic branded one?
They also had a NOS leather Wenger sheath at regular retail. Should I go and grab it ASAP?
