i think there are a few of the Porsche Design(ed)  Wenger... all are were nicely done.

I don't even know if I like the Porsche Design ones or not, but I know I want one :D

Lovely pics :tu:

on the subject.. got a few Wenger's on/off own listings; the keeper's are 2 Swisgrip (original pat. pend version & pat.), a 157 Alinghi (nice tools and handles), a mini grip (needle nosed-traded)... nothing else

How to unscrew a smallish phillips with the Traveler or corkscrew model?  That is a question I have been pondering.  When I was younger I think I always had Teton based models so the question never came up, but I have been using an SI lately and I rather like the can opener/driver.

Cheers

I'm not a big fan of the Porsche models, but congratulations for your great (and rare) find!

Just picked this bad boy up for $32:

I look forward to getting it.  Ranger with heavy duty clippers/scissors, o yeah!  Not super crazy about the main blade, it would be groovier with a OHO NS blade, but it it will do the job just fine.  Ranger 172 plus an SI would make a great Bushwhacking combo!  Add a Becker BK2 and you would have all your bases covered with some overlap too.

Deal info (get it while its hot);

Does anyone know if it is possible to swap Wenger Evo 85 red scales onto a S16 Evo (Patagonia Expedition Race) model? I love the selection of tools on the S16, but could never find one except the yellow with the locking blade I like ( hence the "S" designation).

What about S18 Evo red scales, or Evo 16 ( non locking)?

I'm totally new to Wenger but really like the locking blade, Evolution scales, locking flat blade screw driver, and interior facing tweezers and toothpick.

I've had Vic's since I was a kid ( I have no idea why I was partial to them). Super Tinker has always been an EDC favorite, until this Wenger S16 Evo which is just right - except the color!

Looks like a red s16 is available, also consider the teton and traveller but those are not locking nor do they have the evo grips.

Wenger appearently changed from brown fiber to red plastic handles on their standard models some time in the mid 1930s. Also changed the screwdriver/bottle opener about that time. There are several different types of shield on the fiber handles. Models without shield also show up from time to time, but whether they predate the shields or were simply a variation (lower cost?) is unknown (at least to me).

In any event a very nice find.  :tu:
I remember hearing that plastics eventually disintegrate after 60-80 years; some of the earliest plastics in museums have liquified. It would be interesting to know if some of the early plastic handles are still intact.

Plastics can be damaged by the sun, temperature etc.. If you leave, here, a plastic container it deteriorates in a year after the summer UV rays and heat get it.

Regarding the scales on SAKs, some of the earlier types used will crack, or in the case of celluloid?, even catch fire.

In the SAK owners manual book there were a few examples of various types and their problems, as well as some experiments with lighting them, from what I remember.

I am sure someone  ;)  will post a bit about it soon.

I haven't been able to find a source for a Red S16 in the USA. Does anyone have a source or an answer to my question about changing scales?

I don't see one in the USA either, it could be that Felinevet could get it for your?  Or an oversees member could get one for you?  I see a red one online over here for about $40.  I will be coming stateside, I might be able to pick it up for you.

Cheers

I see a lot of flack over the hybrid serrated/straight blade, but if I only have room for one blade, I'd rather have that one.

This one also had a smaller blade that was a plain edge.  Best of both worlds! :)

Well, I was hoping to show here what I grabbed on ebay last November.
Next Saturday will be exactly two months since it was shipped.
I had much hope for this baby (that I had been looking for ages), but I guess it is now time to face the fact that it was probably lost and that I would never get it.
I am attaching a picture from the auction.

I can't quite make my mind up as to who I prefer Victorinox or Wenger...
Isn't it a bit like being asked to choose between your kids. You love both, each has a different character, one may be easier to live with - but you love them both the same non-the-less.

I'm not too giddy about most of the common Vic's - simply because they are just that "Common" - so I see absolutely no reason to buy. Most of their lines have been out for sooooo long - the market seems awash.  It seems they almost never bring anything radically new out - BUT, the build quality is simply sublime...no other word for it.

Wenger...WOW!! - love the different speSmurfpillst tools. S557, The Evo range, Mountain bike, Roller Skating, Matterhornm, Teton, Plus the Platinum versions etc etc..
Then as we go up the ladder we see the new generation of Ranger grips, go slightly higher and note the Mike Horn special, higher still and the 90 greets you before you come to the mighty Rescue 88

I think it's almost universally accepted here that Wenger are the most innovative of the two at present. But Vic's undisputed king...The Spirit, still has room for improvement, OHO, Bit changing, Blunt nosed design, reduction to juice proportions  etc etc.

Make no mistake, the mighty Vic' could still show wenger a thing or two....but if only it could be bothered :pok:

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Pictures and box label.
I bought the knife from ebay.com for around $ 55.
I think that the auction was probably not noticed, as I was expecting much more competition.

A few years back the Regional Mail Handling Facility in northern Virginia rented a bunch of semi trailers to hold the overflow during the Christmas rush. Next summer some supervisor started wondering why they were still taking up space in the parking lot. You guessed it; they were still full of undelivered Christmas cards and packages.

Glad you finally got your knife. :tu:

Not likely. If anyone was punished it would have been some poor SOB well down the chain-of-command. Probably the only reason the stuff didn't end up in a land fill was because the press got wind of it.
