The Wenger knives I own are up to par with the Victorinox ones when it comes to quality, and fit and finish in my opinion.  Some Wenger tools are different from Victorinox's counterparts, but different does not always mean less good ...

The design of the scissors for example is quite different from the ones found on the Vic knives, other spring mechanism, small serrated teeth ...  Some people hate them, others love them.  I for one love the spring mechanism on the Wenger scissors. The can opener is also different, I prefer the Vic design, and apparently others felt the same, since Victorinox changed them to their own design on the Vic Delémont knives, while keeping the "old" Wenger style scissors.

In my opinion, Wenger took more risks in the design fase, leading to some brilliant ideas, and to some failures.  While Victorinox played it safe most of the time (nonetheless, they still have some oddities in their history as well  ;)).

I love my Wengers, and I'm very happy I got the chance to go to Switzerland in 2015, when there were still plenty of n.i.b. Wenger knives to be found (I'm not saying that they are all gone over there, since I was also able to find some sweet,  discontinued for more than 15 years, SAK's back then.  But last year, during my vacation to Austria we took a day trip to Vaduz (the capitol of liechtenstein) and all the Wengers were gone there, while in 2015 they still had Wengers in every store.  But I guess that in other, less "tourist infested" towns, you can still find new Wengers.

I feel bad about all the ones I didn't buy back in 2015 .  But my desire to buy SAK's often outweighs the capabilities of my wallet ...  ::).

lol.  Seems like most agree that Wenger isn't up to Vic's quality in general.  Victorinox absorbed Wenger after Wenger got into financial trouble several years ago, made some changes but a lot of the tools (ie blade, scissors, caplifter) are still the same.   You can easily find used Wengers on eBay.

It's funny, when I was a kid I was always bummed when a store's Swiss Army Knife section only had Wengers.  I remember asking my dad about it, I don't really remember what he said but I do remember saying that Wengers are Swiss Army Knives too.... he always bought Victorinox for me though, but did get my brother a Wenger Trout.

These days I just love carrying a Wenger SI and a few 85mm, but not too often.

Some tools are the same and some have been changed (the awl for example). However, the steel they use is now the same as for Victorinox's "own" knives, as opposed to the slightly softer steel that Wenger knives used.

I think a good measure of W vs V is that MacGyver used them both alternatively :D

I've always considered Vs to be better than Ws but that was before owning them. They have their advantages (scissors, pliers, wrench and more original special runs...) and the fact that they were from the the French-speaking part of Switzerland made me ever more sad to see them go. The Schwitzer-dutch-speaking won the "war".

The best Wengers ever made were produced after Vic bought them.  Vic quality and Wenger innovation in full flower.

Here's a bit of vintage Wenger love... an old 1960s (I think) Allsport 93mm.  Apart from a slightly tweaked screwdriver and a ding on the small clip point blade (which should come out with a bit of work), it's in amazing shape.  I did a Hobie sandpaper polish job on the two blades and got out the worst of the scratches.  It's got a wicked looking saw!  What a cool old knife.

Really nice! And with a saw too! Am I right to assume that the can opener is also in similar great condition?
It's too bad the crest lost most of its red, these are the coolest looking ones imo. It's still gorgeous in silver though... I wonder if there's a way to restore it.

I just brought one of these (minus the saw) with a big blade snapped in half to the vic spa to see if there's anything they can do for it. Not much hope but we never know :D

Good ole Viking,  saved this one from the chopping block... Cuz everyone needs at least one classic Wenger keychain.

Seems like Wenger had a high percentage of knives without toothpick and tweezers. Especially in the 90's.   I think this one's from the 80s early 90s and it has the toothpick and tweezers. It's one of my favorites.

Funny you should ask. I got several of these and converted one of them to a Classic 10 with a set of scales that added T&T. The scales just popped right off.  :D

John

Footnote regarding Wenger scales . . .
Changing scales on the Wenger requires knowing which version scales are needed. Wenger changed how they attach several times. Had to do a little research to ensure I was getting the proper ones. Not as straightforward as with Victorinox scales.

Yes. Wenger designed a number of smaller "AT" with the small screwdriver and this was one of them. I still wouldn't put any of them in carry-on luggage though.

Thanks!
Started picking up some of the Wenger to have examples of their equivalent to some of the most poplular Victorinox. Their 85mm size makes them a bit easier to carry in smaller pockets and tighter fitting dressier clothes.
