Standard monthly water usage
on: November 01, 2011, 02:08:08 AM
Just to get an idea of how bloody much water my household goes through monthly, how many gallons (yes gallons, for you litre-lovers :P) of water does your household go through?

Averages about 6,000 a month, family of four. I tend to be a water Nazi though, but only because of the cost. Never understood the idea of "water conservation", after all it's our most renewal resource, and every drop that comes out of the ground goes back in (one way or another...).

Interesting fact: During the United States Civil War, for every solider that died in combat, two died behind the lines. Primarily from waterborne diseases.

That is an interesting Civil War factoid, chilly, but interesting. :tu:

For a family of three, we used 4,712 gallons last month. :/

Well that seems like a good low number. Average US household use is 69.3 gallons per person per day.

That puts you about 30% below the national average :tu:

In Portugal the average water consumption is about 150 l per person per day (39,6gallon), regarding to public water lines only. We, a family of four living on a flat, take about 200 l per person per day (53,9 gallon). On monthly figures this is 20595 l (5441 gallon).

I feel a little bad about this because we could do better (lower consumption), but when there's only one person pushing to it, it's nearly impossible to achieve it.

Here's a good one: The city of Charlotte, North Carolina ran a massive media awareness camping to reduce water usage in the municipality. The effort was so effective that water use in the city dropped dramatically. Here's the thing, when the city realized that they would not be able to meet their budget (due to decreased water revenues) they raised the water rates to compensate.

I own a townhouse in a complex of 18.  We use a shared water bill for all 18 units, and the cost is built into our HOA fees so we never actually see it.  This combined with the fact that only half the units are lived in full time(the others are second homes, I live on the Resort I work for) and we get a heck of a lot of water and never feel the cost!  I am the VP of the POA, I see our numbers and we are not even close to going over our per capita usage since 5 of the vacant units see their owners only once a year.
