Liking my Gerber
on: January 02, 2008, 11:17:50 PM
I have owned Gerber's in the past and I have been quite impressed with the quality that they had to offer.  I had never owned a full sized one though, so when I was offered one in a trade I jumped at the chance.

Well it arrived today and I am loving the flick out pliers. Ok they rattle a bit, but the way they shoot out is really cool  8).  This tool definitely has the "fiddle factor".  :)

I always thought they would do the job but just seem a bit cheapy.  Ok it's not as tight as some other multi's, but it is still damn good!  :)

Roadie thinks it is just called a Multiplier as he has one like it.  It must be a few years old now.

We're finally getting through to you all! Been carrying my MP400 around with me a lot this hols, the scissors have been very handy with all these pressies. And being quite small its not as offensive looking.

This thread has a nice explanation by J-sews on the evolution of this style of tool

Thanks for the link.  Mine is the same as number 5 on his list, so it doesn't lock either which is a benefit for us in the UK.

Any ideas how old it could be then?

And that was filed in 1991, so after that sometime!

No problem, it would be interesting to know when all those little changes took place, anyone got a contact at Gerber that would know about that sort of thing?

The 600 came out in about 1997 Benner. If you've got the #5 version which proceeded it, your's must be 1996 or 1995 maybe.

Wish I knew those dates more precisely :-\

My MP600 has a black-oxide plier head, but the handles are yellow (simply painted, I believe) and the tools are bead blasted.

Oh shoot! I just remembered that LM123 wanted me to post some pictures of that for him to see!

Sorry buddy, I'll get it over the weekend, I promise!

I've had my 600 for about 3 years now,and it's still going strong;granted,I don't use it to the full limits of it's ability,or beyond often, but it's still hanging in there.

I'm really diggin that feature as well.  Infact, you can actually open everything one handed as the tools clump (which I like) and on my multiplier they don't lock.
