gloves for mechanics?
on: November 15, 2011, 03:45:46 PM
Hey all,

Im after a decent pair of gloves for when i'm working on trains/cars and I've seen the gloves with knuckle protection - can anyone recommend a good pair? some of them seem fairly expensive. Are they hard wearing?

cheers folks

I've used these before, but just as general work gloves.

http://www.mechanix.com/search/all-gloves

They fit very nicely and work very well for picking up tools and small objects and the like, but I've found they're not as durable as I would like.  The pads of the fingers and thumb tend to wear through after a while.

after seeing what my knuckles looks like without skin on top i bought a pair like these from Grainger a couple years ago. Still gotta take them off when i start messing with fiber optic and cat3/5/6.

+1 for Mechanix gloves.

I only have worn the Fast Fits for the light duty stuff that I do, but they have been great.

I don't get along with mechanic's gloves. The new kids always come in, fresh from tech school, wearing gloves everywhere. To me it's a mark of accomplishment when your hands get hard and calloused from years of hard use. Just old school I guess...

Besides, how many guys can rough sand wood with the skin of their knuckles?  :D

Call into B&Q; they do a good pair of gloves for £12  :tu:

They definitely look and feel hard wearing but comfortable :D

I got a pair of 5.11 Station Grip gloves. I'm very pleased with them; if they get particularly dirty they go into the washing machine  :D

everytime we do a store flip at work my hands look like i stuck them into an automobiles serpentine belt while it is running. Cant wear them doing alot of the finer work..but they are a lifesaver working with airplane/wire cable. And moving duct work. :o

I can see where they would be a life saver in cable, duct work, and any type of thin sheet metal work. :tu:
I can usually lightly run my finger along most any knife edge, but with the fresh edge of thin sheared metal, my skin doesn't stand a chance  :ahhh

please contact us so we can help,we would be gratefull if you would leave
us good feedback,we have to rely on royal mail/carriers to deliver in good
time but as we have no control over this please contact us on

I think I'll wait till I have the item till you get feedback thanks

Or is it just me

Its not just you Mate  :tu:

If I bid on something I normally pay very quickly, as a buyer I can't be any better so it annoys me that they don't give positive feedback until after I have left them some  >:(

I thinking of only giving them feedback if they gave me a good review first
Am I being childish?  :-\

Don't think they're demanding instant feedback just that they would appreciate good feedback; don't we all? :D

I don't ebay that much but I do buy and sell on a forum that has a feedback feature. Even when I'm selling I don't leave feedback until the deal is completed and we are all happy  :) I suppose that's easier done in community forum than down in the 'bay  :-\

I would never leave feedback before I received the goods  :twak:

[rant]
I bought something on Amazon Marketplace a few months ago. Took a week to receive the goods and I rated them accordingly. They contacted me and asked me to change it using a similiar tone as yours i.e. Royal Mail, not our fault, etc.
That would have been fine apart from the fact the posting date on the parcel was a few days previous. They didn't post in a timely manner, nothing to do with Royal Mail  ::) [/rant]

Reading that Ryan I don't think they want advance feedback, they're just asking you to keep in mind that RMs delivery time varies when you leave feedback and relevant number of stars.

Its not well worded though.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I agree there and never request it.  That said I can understand as quite a large number of buyers don't bother with it and on ebay better feedback can mean better sales figures.

You soft whippersnappers! My dad was a mechanic for 40 years, and never wore gloves! :P

Though from growing up and seeing his bloodied and gouged knuckles, maybe gloves would have helped.  ;)

My father's hands are to the point where he breaks light bulbs trying to change them and wnen the time came to hold all of his newborn grandchildren he was afraid to because he did not want to hurt them he has very little feeling in his nads after beating them up so much. when he was a young man I used to watch him pop open an unopened beer can with his right hand.I say gloves are a good thing myself...
