No matter what I send overseas I mark as a gift with a zero dollar value as a gift shouldn't have a value right? :D

I don't think the intent of the package has any bearing.  Here in Texas, so many people abused the Gift option on Title registrations that they did away with it and now your vehicle taxes are based on a (much higher) presumptive value that the state determines, no matter if it truly was a gift or not.  Doesn't matter what you pay, you could even pay more than they think it's worth and the taxes will still be based on their presumptive value.

Ashley has the right idea that way they won't charge you a cent for it when you have it delivered and customs will more or less ignore it almost completely and look for other higher value items to nose around.

And we have a downer. I just had to send the postman away with my gift.  He was asking $30 for it. It was labelled kirk13/MTO. Kirk13, did you send me a gold brick instaid of that Vic Waiter?  :-\ If so I still have time till the 19th to pick it up.

Can you accept Paypal?  I'd be happy to contribute to cover the cost.

Taxes :ahhh oh well, some learning lessons to be had for next years pool. I finally posted mine after various glitches  marked as gift, as it is and a value shown but only around 12 £/$ so should be okay for its recipient :tu: Maybe we should make a list of import thresholds etc, UK is £40.00 so less than that no fee, just an idea  Some info from UK HMRC
Quote
Ordering and paying for goods over the Internet to be sent to someone other than to you doesn't count as a gift and the recipient will be liable to pay UK duties and taxes.
By contrast a gift - defined as something sent directly by one private individual to another - doesn't attract import VAT if its value is £40 or below.
and this
Quote
If you're sending or receiving a gift from outside the EU:
Excise Duty is payable on any alcohol or tobacco products.
Customs Duty is payable if the value of the gift exceeds £135, but will be waived if the amount of duty is £9 or under.
Import VAT is payable if the value of the gift exceeds £40.
To qualify as a gift:
It must have been sent from a private person outside the EU to a private person(s) in the UK.
The Customs Declaration must be completed correctly (see link below).
It must be for the use of either you or your family.
There must be no commercial or trade element and it must not have been paid for by the recipient either directly or indirectly.
It must be of an occasional nature only - for example for a birthday or anniversary.
If it's perfume or toilet water it must be within the allowances described in the earlier section 'Perfume and toilet water'. If the allowances are exceeded than charges apply on the excess.
More here clicky

the only issue is this; if the postal service loses the package and you want to try and recover the cost of the contents, if you've marked it down as zero then that's exactly what you'll get from them. :-\

This is bothersome. My calculations show that my gift could cost the recipient 12 quid :(
If this happens, let me know and PM me your PayPal email :tu:

Thanks

I was all set to let you guys convince me to open it when the misses came in and took it away.  Apparently it's a gift from her and they accidentally used my name, so now I'll have no choice but to wait and it felt heavy like a multitool.   :ahhh

Will the suspense never end!?!

The Value on the customs form is a pain but if you stay within the limits you don't need to enter a zero amount so claiming money back would not be an issue, they would have to prove the item was not worth what you were saying and if have lost it then then can not say it is not worth what your asking for so long as you have a recipt of some kind to prove it is that value you are asking back in your claim.

I have made many claims for missing Ebay stuff which I have sent both in the UK and further a field USA, Canada, Australia, South America etc.. and the amounts claimed back were always different to what was put on the customs form if I was unsure if the buyer was going to get taxed or duty added in there country I would down play the value on the customs form to help them out.

Never had a claim denied or not paid out if the item is proper lost they have no way of proving the value as long as you can prove the value they have to pay out if it has insurance on the cost of the shipping.
