Design a SAK
on: January 06, 2008, 07:23:21 AM
Given a shiny crown and the throne of Elsener, what would you design?

I suppose for references sake, best to keep to existing parts/tools, (though if you think you've pioneered a new blade and don't mind us stealing it and making a fortune off of your concepts, by all means, publish ahoy)

By extension - what are your top rated SAK blades?

For me, in many ways, the Soldier remains a solid combination of tools - Can opener, Caplifter/screwdriver/prybar, Knife, and Spike.

After those core four (upgrading the Spike to the Hooked version from the Spirit), I'd have a Corkscrew and a metal file - all this in a 111mm frame.

If it's not too chunky I'll throw in a Woodsy Saw - Something I've never actually put a lot of effort into carrying, but I see the appeal.

(Note: After reading about the Master Electrician and Gardner models with inexplicable dual-Phillips, I'm trying to imagine the layers a knife would best be fit together in)

I'd design an Alox 3 layered SAK that had a knife, como tool, phillips, awl and a file.  That would be my perfect SAK. :)

Swisstool with a cyber tool-like 1/4 hex bit holder. Other than that, maybe a case that'll hold the multi-tool plus good tweezers, hex bit set.ink pen, flashlight etc,etc..
For a folding knife I'd like to see a one-hand opening blade made from D2 or similar,as a special production run.

My custom Scibeer Yoman is as near perfection as anything could be for me.  It's a Yoeman with a saw layer added.  The only thing I would add to it if I could is an awl.

The Yoman is pictured on the right:

The Farmer is very close to perfection also, but I would like to add scissors.

For me it would have to be either a OH Outrider or OH Locksmith.

My perfect SAK would be very similar to Benners. But I would want a knife, seatbelt cutter like on ST RS and the Rescue Tool, woodsaw, file, and an awl. Only 5 blades and that would be my perfect SAK

I would make a OHT with only the main blade, woodsaw, and file/metal saw. Might be slightly fat but would pair nicely with a Skeletool.

That is a "Spudman" pictured on the left--another custom job.

The compass is from Rotokid's shop: http://tinyurl.com/36raky

The 108mm Safari Hunter is very close to your perfect SAK, but it doesn't have the file.  It is pictured top center here.  The saw, corkscrew and awl aren't extended but they are there, just like on the GAK and Mauser, also pictured.  This particular Hunter is being upgraded with orange G-10 scales right now.  I despise those Staglon scales.:

Like all 108mm models, they have, unfortunately, been discontinued for quite some time  :-[ .  Felinevet may still have some.  The current 111mm Hunter is basically the same thing, has a locking blade, and is cheaper: http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Hunter-Olive-53642/dp/B000687AWC

I think OHT with a plain blade and G-10 handles would be about perfect. Maybe make it about a half inch shorter.

I'd go with a farmer with scissors too, and maybe they could incorperate a matchstriker/nailfile into one of the small tools too :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

I was thinking the other day how nice a Cadet would be if you added the ALOX (P)Lumberjack saw.  You'd basically have a small Farmer with match striker, and I think you could modify the nail file to be used as an awl.

mmmm.....  Green Cadet with saw....

I talked to Scibeer about it, and he said he's not comfortable with doing 84mm mods.  It's a shame...

Here is a poor quality pic I found on SOSAK.  The red one open at the top is the Safari Hunter, and the two at the bottom are stag Safari Hunters--faux stag on the left and real stag on the right.  I think I've seen some of these where the gutting blade is plain edged, but mine is serrated and would work great as a seat belt cutter.

Those big 111mm SAK's are nice. I have an Adventurer with the regular handles and I love it. They're pretty good sized but not heavy at all and make a wonderful EDC knife.
