Got my first knife :)
on: December 22, 2011, 07:00:18 PM
I just came home from the shop with my first knife  :)
It is a traditional small yemeni dagger
But unffortunly it is not sharpend at all  :(
And the blade material is very bad  :(
And it is very dirty  :(
I will try to get it to another shop to sharpen it

But if there is a way to sharpen it in home with out stones , just tell me

I will try to get pics soon

Ah, Sounds Like You May Have Gotten A Dagger Made More For Show Than Use.
If You're Looking For A Good Knife To Be Used, I Would Try To Get A Nice Folder Or Maybe A Esee Izula Or Something Similar.

If you don't have any kind of stone you could try gluing some emery cloth/wet an dry/'sandpaper for metal' (I don't know what it will be called over there) to a flat piece of wood and use that to 'file' the blade  :salute:

If it doesn’t work you have only wasted some time

Everything’s adjustable

Isn't it possible to sharpen it with the back side of a mug ??

Its possible to touch up a slightly dulled edge with the ceramic on the bottom of a mug. From what you described it appears that there is no defined edge yet, so the ceramic mug trick won't really work for you. the sandpaper is probably your best choice, without stones.

I'll tell you from experience if its a "show" dagger sharpening it isn't a good idea. I tried that once. Didn't work to well as is wouldn't take a correct angle. Good luck!  :tu:

Chances Are, If You Use A Stone Or Any Sharpening System You're Going To Scratch The Blade Because You're Going To Have To Completely Regrind The Blade, Profile The Edge, Grind It Into An Edge, And Then Sharpen It.

Unless You've Done This A Few Times Before Your Edge Will Most Likely Be Uneven. If It's Made For Display, It's Not Made For Use Or Sharpening. My Brother Has A Lot Of Display Pieces That I've Passed Onto Him/Gotten Him, And They Are Just Strictly For Looks.

They're Very Nice But They're Just Not Live Knives, They Were Made To Look Nice, Not Become Users.

My Original Suggestion Stands. You Can Get a Decent Little Knife For Pretty Cheap. Actually, There's a Flea Market Here That Sells Some Decent Knives For Cheap, If You'd Like Me To Look For You.

I didn't knew that it was just a display knife , and I paied 12$ for it , so I should do something useful with it
And I can't give it back to the shop , because it's very far from my house
And I don't think I can get cheap and good knives here , my brother got a gerber vallotton for 75$ today
I may get a SAK , there are a good shop selling them close to me , but there prices are not fair too

And I don't have a paypal account

Just out of curiosity, do those SAKs have the Swiss cross or, for example, that logo with a globe & capital V?
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.
