I make simple lanyards and fobs for some knives for different reasons.  I'll try to get some pics posted when I get home from the office.

Nope...

Paracord isn't real popular round these parts (we're more of a torn Minty Wrapper people)
Anyone want to extol the virtues of this mighty string to me?

They are listed somewhere between Beer and Vegemite.

Tearing the wrappers into long strings is a popular passtime.

Presumably if one had enough, they could be woven into a sturdy truck strap.

Heres a neck lanyard I braided and tied up. Im gonna give it to a friends son who's just got into duck hunting with me. I made the calls removable so he can use the lanyard for other things if he wishes.

It's great cord/rope! it's very strong, the in-nerds/strands can be taken out and used as thread, bright colors for visibility, camo and dark for blending in, just about anything you can use string and rope for you can use paracord for. I use 550 (as many do)

On one hand, I consider that stuff to be roughly equivalent to pubic hairs on the list of things I would like to use as rope -

On the other hand, much like pubic hair, I have heaps of it lying around the house!

I may acquire some (I usually use Spectra).
Is it related to Hootchie cord?

Anyone have a link to a tutorial on how to tie that round lanyard Mike D has on the flashlight. I can tie the square ones lickety split but have not seen a good tut for the round ones.

Thanks,
Greg

Well deano was very kind and sent me some excess red paracord (not quite 550 but its very nice!) he had lying around, and here is my first attempt at a square weave, mixed with a little of my black paracord i had left. Its a little long for anything useful but i'm impressed with how it turned out! Tried to do a snake knot/weave thing but failed miserably!

Hi

Thats a nice tight looking square stitch, just need to work on your closing stitch   ;)

The snake stitch is a hard one, not to learn but to get it tight, the key is tightening each knot twice... try a cobra they have got to be the easiest:

Left = Snake, Right = cobra

Loads of links on the web, like these:

Knot tying is one skill I wish I could pick up. I practice but I just can't seem to get it. Directions online just confuse me and my fingers are kinda fumbly too.

Whats wrong with my closing stitch? :P It will be taken apart and made into 2 separate ones, my house mate was quite impressed with it, so they'll get one of them.

Yeah i've done the Cobra one before and that is pretty easy, just the snake that leaves me confused! I'll give it another go tomorrow afternoon after my exam, its quite relaxing once you get going! Thanks for the links though.

This is a simple but very effective (and dare I say it attractive) little knot:

Once I used hemostats I went right out and bought a couple. They are great for heat-sinking electronics parts and holding wires together for soldering .... and minor things like brain surgery.  ;) :)

Remember, I won in the Holiday Give-away last month. Among the prizes that Calvin gave me were 5 pieces of paracord zipper pulls and keyholders of different type of stitches. I believed those nice items came from Deano.

I was inspired me to make a square stitch keyolder. Yesterday I was able to get a few meters of cord of 2 colors (neon green and neon violet). These cords are smaller than the 550 but that is the only size available in my area.

The 5 items on top came from Calvin. Below right are the 2 rolls of materials I used, and the end product after 5 attemps is on the left. I do not know how to make the closing stitch, so I just melted the 2 ends of the green cord with a soldering iron.

Closeup of the end product and the materials I used.

sorry Nomad for taking so long to reply (I'm old n slow)

I think it may be related (I had to look it up!).
I use spectra line for my 2 line stunt kits
spectra is strong but I'm sure as you know it has a low melting point
and not good for tying knots, para-cord is much better for knots.

another name for para-cord is parachute cord.
Wikipedia says:
Parachute cord (also paracord or 550 cord) is a lightweight nylon kernmantle rope originally used in the suspension lines of US parachutes during World War II. Once in the field, paratroopers found this cord useful for many other tasks. It is now used as a general purpose utility cord by both military personnel and civilians. This versatile cord was even used by astronauts during STS-82, the second Space Shuttle mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope.[1]

The braided sheath has a high number of interwoven strands for its size, giving it a relatively smooth texture. The all nylon construction makes paracord fairly elastic; depending on the application this can be either an asset or a liability.

Hi Eddie, yes from the top row all are my work except the "skull" one.

Eddie

The closing stitch and the melting are critical parts and do take a while to perfect.  If you need any tips just ask...

Thanks
deano

Good old exams, in a way I'm glad I'm not taking any exams now, hated revision and I was one of those people that has to do days of revision or I get a crap mark. But then again if your not learning, its working, which gets tedious at times, enjoy the free afternoons whilst you can roadie :D
