I tried to create a few decorative knots from some online tutorials, but in the end I just had to admit to myself the art of rope tying is just not for me...

Knot work can definitely take patience to get right sometimes, and even I get aggravated when I can't seem to get one done to where it looks correct, so I'll give up on it for a little while, then come back to it later and try it again. Some knots do take a lot of practice to get proficient at tying them.

When I was in the Boy Scouts, once we got tying a specific knot down without looking at a diagram in a book, we'd then try tying it with our eyes closed, then behind our back, and even while holding our breath underwater (simpler knots like a clove hitch and variations of the bowline and whatnot). There'd be a paint can or bucket full of rocks, probably only eight or nine feet deep by the boat dock, although that seemed like a lot more to to a kid at summer camp, and we'd swim down and have to tie onto the handle then swim back up and see if our knot would hold when we pulled it up. ;)

I've used the imported glow-in-the-dark paracord that's sold by multiple vendors and it worked out alright, but it shows dirt easily and isn't going to stay clean if it's handled often, which is par for the course with most light colors of paracord.  Atwood Rope MFG has several versions, but I've not tried them...

I'm into multitools, but I've not yet come to an understanding about paracord. Why is it a thing? What is the usefulness of having it wrapped around your handle or whatnot? I don't get it...

Charles.

Well, it's easy to work with. Gives you a better grip. Can be used in emergencies and has great resistance.

to name a few,  ::), a couple meters of paracord are enough for...

- Cordage for makeshift bags, transportation
- Structure building, or supporting
- Object retrieval (down the drain, or a hole...)
- Reach increment
- Holding, hanging, securing, closing and repairing stuff
- Better grip on slippery materials and handles (like poily stainless steel)
- Coloring and highlighting, better location and ease of finding
- Heat insulation, cold insulation (on metallic handles)
- Makeshift shoelaces, clothes' repairing and sewing, backpack closing
- Medical assistance (holding a broken arm, a cast, a joint)
- Fire making, Trap making, Net making, Fishing

A Turk's head knot lanyard bead and rigging/marlinspike knives by David Hopper (Stormdrane), on Flickr

Hey, how is that black plier knife thingy on the right? I've been looking at that as a possible variant of the Ubiquitous Chinese Plier Tool. It looks badass and like a fun knife to have.... but is it any good? I mean, they're $13, I should just buy one I suppose...

The pliers and marlinspike work well, but the knife blade has those overly aggressive pointy serrations that tend to snag.  If you're good with a sharpening stone, you could smooth them out a bit. ;)

Just made a new paracord zip puller for my sling bag. Despite the small size (Midnite Manager for scale), it's about 2 feet/50cm.

 8) 8)

The other one is much smaller, maybe some 6 inches/15cm. They're similar in length, though. That's due to the type of knots used.

I made a short video tutorial on Instagram showing how to make a Plafond knot with paracord.

Hope that link works, any feedback welcome.

It does, thanks!

 :tu: :tu:

Pretty easy to follow. I was affraid the vertical image would "cut" some of the steps or made it difficult to follow where each strand goes but it works great.

Have to try this one. Looks great and makes a pretty kewl zipper pull, keychain or knife lanyard.

In the end, have you tried pulling both ends at the same time, when finalizing the knot?

You could start a Youtube channel, like stormdrane.
