One handed opening of tools never ment to be OHO
on: December 01, 2011, 03:36:00 PM
I often hear/read that a SAK or some multitool is great but can't be opened  with one handed. Well it can, you just have to practice. Here are techniques I use to open "girl" and "boy" Juices, keychain sized Leathermans, SAKs, Vic or Wenger, locking or non-locking. Everything is possible with a bit practice. Oh, and those knives are all shaving sharp, even the Outrider, I just messed up cause I was watching it through the viewfinder. I turned of the sound as I have a cold, and you don't need to hear me sniffing and coughing ;D Sorry about the poor video quality, hoping for Santa to bring me a new camera.

Nice!  It was like watching a magician at work doing card tricks.  The only ones I practiced doing one handed are the LM crunch and I can deploy any tool on my swiss spirit x one handed.

I've always done the OHO pliers, but I like my fingers too much to try OHO SAK blades.  :o

I can OHO the file and saw in waves and charges quite easily. But that doesn't really count because they're in the right position.
OHO pliers is easy too, you just have to use a bit of force.

Yeah I'm fine with the pliers, though it's even faster if they're Gerbers'.  ;)  I can OHO a SAK as well, though I don't unless it's necessary.

Nifty finger work there!

I pretty much do the same with some smaller tools like the Micra - not sure I'd be brave enough (read, too clumsy) to do the SAK blade trick.

Just tried it with a SAK. Nope, beyond my capabilities  :(

Any more practise may result in blood loss, so I'll leave it there :)
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

That's what I had in mind. Come on people, post your OHO techniques. People who play as much with SAKs and multis as we do have to have some OHO skills.

Wow, I never even thought to try OHO with a SAK. I tried MrGareth's technique and got it to work but not nearly as smoothly :-[

I OHO pliers quite often and if I need to OHO a SAK or folder I'll do it the same way as Gareth

I'd never try it left hand though, even if I can dial 999 one handed with my right  :D

Another little clip of me OHO a Wave, left handed.  Time for Leatherman to look at doing a left handed version perhaps? ::)

I was practicing the OHO trick with SAK blades for a while (pretty much Gareth's technique, left hand), one time practicing it I cut my thumb really really bad. ...I intended this as a cautionary tale, but this thread has got me doing it again.  :P I'll never manage it as smoothly as the above guys.

You're left handed, right?  :D

Now do a Wave balisong opening. :pok:

Yes, I have to admit it, I am indeed left handed. :D

My Wave is nowhere near loose enough to do that with, my original Supertool on the other hand, most certainly is.

It's very easy with one of my gardeners (the blade sticks out quite a bit). The other gardener is too sticky.

The only other tool I can open with one hand is a SAK's corkscrew ;)

Like Gareth, I'm a lefty, and the OHO blades on LMs are a pain to use. I flick them open with my middle finger, much like shown in Gareth's video. Some of my tools, like my Skeletool, are broken in enough that they open all the way and lock with a good flip of the finger. It may look offensive if viewed from the wrong angle, but hey, it's the New Jersey state bird :P, and it works.

Hmmm... I think its handy to be able to handle knives with as much skill as possible. It's a tool, and both hands are not always free. It can also be used for self defense and the faster and easier you can access and open a blade intended for that purpose is important. It can be a life safer and you may only have one hand available to access and use it. So, i get OHO.

I too am left handed, although I can use my right hand for many things as well.
I usually open OHO knives with my right hand but I use the left hand technique too.

I milled a slot to the Surge's blade exchanger to make it a left handed OHO.

Works great! I've done it to 4 of them (two for me and 2 for clients) and they have been a super hit.
