What do you all use to sharpen your Vics?
on: December 15, 2011, 12:24:52 PM
I just got an exellent condition Executive from ebay and everything is in order except for some small nicks in the main blade. So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to the best sharpening method/product for Vic steel. Any and all help is appreciated

To sharpen a Victorinox Pocket Knife I use a Victorinox Pocket Knife Sharpener  :D :D
In fact I use that for most of my knives, large and small unless for heavy work or reprofiling etc.

Best means we have tested all sharpening systems and concluded which is the best. I have not done that.
However...,
I use the Lansky System (has 4 fixed angle settings), which has one angle setting that fits the edge angle of the swiss army knives perfectly, with very good and quick results.
For really damaged blades I would also do some hand sharpening, to shape the blade and its edge, before using the Lansky.

Here is my experience with the Lansky: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,28006.msg488524.html#msg488524

I hand sharpen all my knives and use a lot my small rat tail in medium-fine grit diamond for small damages on the blade and then a little hard arkansas stone is use for the finish.

Cuting small strips of paper along the way helps to feel if your getting sharper in your process.

The best sharpening method/product depends a lot to each person...I think it depends of your dexterity, skills, experience, personnal finances and a lot of other factors  :)

A nicked blade? I would take it to a professional and have it sharpened.

Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker

Smith's Diamond Retractable Sharpener

and stropping on a piece of leather (I know it's best for convex edges, but I've gotten fantastic results)
