I just got my copy. First impressions are very good. Mine has a flat bottom scale with a top vaulted scale. It makes for a very nice and comfortable profile.

Here's a rather attractive piece to add to the quorum.

Karl,

That one is very attractive!  It actually looks similar to one of the scales on my wifes:

I don't know.  It's hosted on photobucket and maybe it's uploaded to a pre-determined size.

Had this one for about a week before it went back. Not a fan of the sloppy glue work.  Was also not impressed by the tool selection of the executive.  Wish this would have been made in a more useful 84mm with scissors.

Interesting....

Peter Atwood complained about sloppy gluework on his Mammoth scaled tool also.

I honestly paid no attention until my wife pointed it out.  Of course she paid for the knife and started pointing out it's flaws.

I've mentioned it to another proud swiss knife maker and he told me the scales are not swiss cut/finished.  Curious who glues them on.  A tiny bit of glue goes a long way.

Lastly, I have seen other mammoth scaled SAKS and really wish Victorinox would have put just a tiny bit more effort into it before release.  I think I saw a 91 or 84 somewhere out there and the guy did an incredible job.  I'll see if I can locate it.

That is what I am talking about!!

INCREDIBLE WORK!!!

To me, that is what VIC quality should be for what they are asking.

Thanks for finding the thread.

Disclaimer- Sorry to those that have this knife and like it.  Enjoy it.  My posts are only my opinion and personal views after receiving 2 different mammoth knives.  Both had the same issues as mentioned in my previous posts.

No glue work issues on mine, but there is an ugly crack in one of the scales. I know mammoth tusk ivory can have cracks but this just looks like a production issue

I don't know how Mammoth tusk is to work, so I can't say.  I have one that I EDC with a little glue running, but it doesn't bother me.  The other two at my house have no glue issues.

I figured splits and cracks were par for the course, but when I look at ong's work, I don't know...

For $165.00, I could not live with running glue.

I wish I had not seen ONG's work.  Maybe I would have been happy with the Vic version.

It's a personal thing.  If you are happy, Enjoy.

Ya I think if you are picky and want it as close to perfection as possible, it's the kind of thing you have to do yourself, or have a pro do it.  The bark is not a homogenous material like other scale materials, and its going to crack etc.

Agreed.  I did'nt think it got any more professional than straight from Victorinox.  Then again, they are trying to mass produce a product.  I am just grateful I no longer have a horse in this race.  Love the concept, dislike the product.

Enjoy your knives.

I hear you.  $165 is a lot to pay for a knife.  I can see how the glue thing would tick people off.  The cracks, etc, I sort of think that's to be expected for an organic, non produced scale material.  Yes, someone who's talented with handling materials may be able to take scale material like this and produce a flaw free scale, but that's a far cry from scaling up to the level that Victorinox has to, to make a viable commercial product.

Again, I completely understand where you're coming from, but I have to say, even my glue marred Mammoth tusked Executive brings a huge smile to my face whenever I pull it out of my pocket. :tool:

I would have a problem buying any hand finished knife for that money unseen, though I would not have had, until now, such a problem with SAKs.

However, sometimes you can not go to a shop.
What I tend to do, eg with my better slipjoints, is ask for a few good pictures of a few knives of the same model and then choose the best speciment.

I will not mention the vendor but they were not willing to do that.  The two knives I received were worlds apart.  I will not by another specialty knife like this online or allow my wife to be so kind as to buy it for me online.

Case closed and sorry to Highjack a collectors thread.  Just my two cents.

Take care.

I'm pretty sure I know the dealer you contacted (based on the price).  I will say, I contacted a different dealer and was sent a series of pictures of the the knives they had.  I was able to pick the exact one I wanted.

I completely understand your disappointment.  If all of my Mammoth tusk vics had glue runs, I'd be disappointed too.

That said, my mammoth tusked vic feels great in hand and the blade is larger than a classic and is therefore MUCH more functional.  The 74mm sized Vics are really a much more useful size (compared to the 58mm Vics)
