If I recall correctly, and there's every chance I don't, I believe the exposed rivets and bail were only together for a very short time in the early 60 ' s?

I love it!  That knife is a beautiful piece of history.  If only it could speak, I'd love to hear some of its tales....

The Swiss Army Knife Owner's Manual by Young (2011) has the rivets disappearing under the scales in 1961 and the Vic reamer changing from quarter-round to rectangular in cross-section that same year so GigaHz's Champion would be made sometime during that transition year of 1961.

Mid to late. Definitely pre 1970.

146fmaU is correct. I'd say early 1970s, right after the +PAT was dropped. So 1971/1972.

Maybe SAKWIKI needs a little work. I think it has the 146fmau as having a shackle.

I think it has the 146fmau as having a shackle.

The "U" in the old model numbers can refer to either the shackle or the keyring attachment. For example, in the old 1960s alox catalog, the Cadet with keyring is listed as a "2233 Us+" (2xxx = Elinox, 233 = Cadet, U = keyring, s+ = silver scales with red cross).

So, once they moved from shackles to keyrings in the late 1960s, the part numbers stayed the same until the new numbering system was implemented in the mid 1970s.
