essentials only MT - needs to be small
on: December 20, 2011, 10:41:45 PM
The thread on the Gerber Balance made me question what I would consider an 'essentials only' multitool, for daily carry.

And this is the list:

Pliers
Scissors
Bit driver (i.e. screwdriver)
(maybe awl)

(being in the UK - not a knife blade; for a small tool, an awl and scissors cover pretty much everything you would need a knife for)

Size wise, it would need to be at maximum, juice size.

Anyone have any idea on a tool that may fit these criteria?

why not do a custom SAK. it could be quite slim for what you need.  :sak:

This had crossed my mind.

Something which had the cybertool bit driver, scissors, pliers, and awl, and maybe bottle opener/can opener combo.

The only thing about that is I do not have the know how or time to learn to make that, and also having used pliers of butterfly opening multitools, am not a great fan of the SAK pliers, although for small jobs they are perfectly adequate.

Absolutely!!

In fact I've been plotting the same thing for a while. It's another mod - and one I hope to blag someone into doing for me next year sometime. Not sure if this would work for you or not but ...

Gerber Octane ... blade replaced with scissors !!!

I'm not sure what scissors would fit though. Possibly Wingman/Sidekick (cant remember which has them) or Surge. I can't think of any other tools which have linerlocking scissors

Two concerns about that:

What size is the gerber octane?
Its a shame it doesnt have a bit driver, how good are its drivers?

If the skeletool would have been smaller sized, I reckon it wouldnt have been too hard to swap the blade for some scissors, it would have been perfect. Unfortunately its too big to justify having so few tools.

What about a mod like this and make a knifeless kick?

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=1509.0

You could go a bit further and replace the saw blade with an awl, If you're going minimal then the clip would be useful and over all I don't think overall it would feel too large in the pocket.

Add a bit set from a Gerber( it fits the long philips driver) and your sorted

errrmmm ... not sure  :-[

errrmmm ... not sure about that either  :-[ :-[ :-[

I do know it's very slim though, and rides deep in the pocket on the clip. I like the look of the Octane apart from the blade, so scissors would be a great option for me and it means you still get full sized pliers in a minimal space

I did make a knifeless Kick with awl, scissors and bit driver myself too ... but still want the Octane mod  :P

Have you considered the new PMT, made by a collaboration of Leatherman, Gerber, SOG, Vic and Frost? The new "Perfect Multi Tool" boasts only the most essential tools to meet everyone's needs. It is the perfect size for either pocket, keyring and belt sheath carry. All tools are OHO, outside opening and spring assist. Last but not least it also has an awl and SOG's new Shapeshift technology. Wrap your mind around that one! I tried to get a release date but already found one in today's mail. It arrived overnight from Canada.

Knifeless Kick looks nice  ;)

But outside opening tools are a must.

Why no knife?

If it's Juice, then it's still a legal tool in the UK - that would be my choice anyway :)

Style PS for small option, or Juice S2 for medium option.

Leatherman squirt ps4! That's my favourite of the smaller ones.
