Adventures on the Southern Hunters
on: December 24, 2011, 12:57:45 AM
Fingers crossed, this is my third atempt to write this...

Sunday past was the third round of the Southern Hunters HFT air rifle champs, and I was lucky enough to take part.

I was due to meet Tony at 7 in Sutton,to get a lift down to Brighton(well Mile Oak to be specific),and thankfully, cos theres no busses at that ungodly hour,my flatmate had offered to give me a ride to Sutton.

This is where the fun started.-2degrees C aint that cold, but it was enough to freeze the doors on his Peugeot(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peugeot_1007)...it aint no fun when sliding doors freeze shut!(The only time I'd ever sen something like that was in the early 80s when the looks on the DAF my folks had froze...sadly my mum defrosted then and I still had to go to school)

The trip from there was pretty routine, but there was a lovely sunrise over the Sussex countryside, and it was fun to watch the planes making twilight approaches into Gatwick airport.

The shoot was held at Mile Oak,and I do wish I'd taken a camera. The club grounds are on a working farm, the buildings nessling inbetween 2 rolling hills(one felt a little less rolling and a hellofa lot more steep on the trek up to target 13).

The first targets were in the woods before the afore mentioned trek, but the view from the hill was spectacular, the hills, with the farm inbetween, the clear blue skies, the motorway below disapearing into twin tunnels and a view through to the sea!Quite wonderful, and well worth the trip, regardless of the result!

Things took a bit of a turn when Tonys gun started to malfunction,so with the permission of the officals and a marshall to observe,we headed back to strip the recalcagent BSA Hornet. After a few moments rooting,it was looking bad,Tonys allen keys were nowhere to be found...Fortunatly,some one had a Modded Bladeless Fuse and bit kit...

Restored and back in the contest,we finished equal 3rd in class.

Morals to the story1)Never buy cars with slidie doors and 2)Always have a MT with allen Bits when you go shooting ;)
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

It was a cracking course and target 13 was a belter with a lot of people giving it far to much wind.
It was great day to be sure.

Your name was pulled out of the hat for the bonus bunny, but you have to be there to claim your prize (damn you tapatalk where are your smilies.)

How did you like the west London round, which I missed.

I don't know if you have shot at ford before or will be going to the next round but here's a tip if you don't know it already.

When making your way down the old airstrip towards the course pace one of the concrete squares that it is comprised of. This will come in very handy later on.

My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.

Cheers Chip, yeh,I done Ford last season(my first time out),and thats a great tip for the airfield, hadnt thought of that at all!

West London Rangers set a great course, lotsa very tricky long shots(Favourite was 40ish yrd 40mil reducer, hidden behind a brick!Through the hole or a doughnut!)

What class did you shoot(and what did you shoot?)andhow did you do?

So far this year recoiling with my weihrauch 97.

I missed west London due to unforeseen circumstances.

Got 51 at Buxted despite a shaky start which was a PB for me.
Also this was the first time I had shot there and really enjoyed the shoot.

Got a 47 at mile oak which I was very pleased with due to the wind. That and the fact with a springer you can't see your pellet hit so when you do miss you don't know why, you just know you have, meaning you can't then make an educated allowance for wind when taking your next shot.

This was also the first time I had shot there and really enjoyed the course and surroundings.
