What is the best SOG to own?
on: August 21, 2006, 10:07:15 PM
Well I have every Leatherman multi-tool they ever made, I have owned and sold Gerber versions, I own the Swiss Tool with the scissors,I own the Wenger Mini Grip and would like to buy and try out a SOG, so I am looking for opinions as to which model I should try.I am looking for a full size tool.
Any and all suggestions would be welcome, there isn't many SOG dealers in the area I live in so I really haven't had a chance to checkem out. :-\

Thanks in advance,
Kap 8)

Well, the only full sized SOG tool that I have is the Powerlock, which is discontinued, but still quite common.  It is indeed a hefty set of pliers, and it does address a number of issues that were common to the first generation multitools, such as the sheet metal edges that dig into your hands- The PowerLock has folding plates that cover the edges.  Also, it was revolutionary in that the tools are replaceable in case you prefer a different configuration or in case one gets broken.
Unfortunately, it has a few drawbacks to it as well IMHO.  Because the parts are interchangeable with many of the other models, many of the tools are quite small in comparison to the humongous tool.  In fact, the body of the Powerlock is almost twice the size of the Leatherman PST II, and yet the blade is actually smaller than the LM's.
There are a few other issues I have with it, but it is still a functional tool, and quite popular.  I can't wait to see what SOG comes up with to replace it.

I have the Mini Toolclip and I think it's great.  I wouldn't mind getting a fullsized one sometime.

I have been trying to get a hol of one of those for a while.  They certainly seem popular as every time I see one for sale, someone has beaten me to it!  I am also interested to hear what other folks think about it.

Well, those who have known me for any length of time knows full well that when faced with a choice of one tool or the other, I will almost always pick both... so you are both right!
I have just come to the realization that 20+ multis is nowhere near enough!

That's the one I'm thinking of getting.  Except the S45 model that has the 1/4 drive and the medium screwdriver.

You mean the company or the tool?  Either way, for me, the answer is not really...  But I am seriously tempted to find out!

I've handled Swisstools & Gerbers, and I own SAKs & Leatherman -

but I've never even seen a SOG, compared to Leatherman (that being with what I am most familiar multitoolwise) how is a SOG Multi? (As far as finish, quality, ease of use, comfort etc)

I have never seen a SOG either.   Nobody around here seems to sell them.
LM and Gerber are all over the place.

The SOG forum here also seems quiet compared to the others.

This is an old thread.  What would be a more current answer to the OP?

Does anyone out there have the  SOG pocket powerplier? If so what do you think about it?

Pocket PowerPlier

Two models currently available the 44 + 45 ( see chart below )

Lighter and more compact than its big brother, the PowerPlier, the Pocket PowerPlier is super easy to carry and use. SOG's Pocket PowerPlier is packed with essential tools that include pliers/grippers, wire cutters, partially serrated blade, small/large screwdrivers, Phillips screwdriver, three-sided file, can opener, bottle opener, awl, rulers, lanyard and heavy duty leather pouch.

Exclusive interlocking gears are the driving force behind SOG's renowned PowerPlier® Series. They allow these amazing multi-tools to be opened with a one-handed flip of the wrist and also generates Compound Leverage™ action that doubles the pliers force with one-time the hand pressure. These gears also allow the pliers to be easily flipped open with one hand so your tool is ready to act quickly.

I just received a PPP from a MT member yesterday - looks nice and is a lot lighter than the modified PowerLock EOD model(s) that I carry.

Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

Look at the chart above and pick your poison - it's a matter of what tools you want and use - however  other tools can be removed / substituted /added as needed , all of which are available for purchase from SOG
