Vic Solo file work?
on: January 05, 2012, 01:39:28 AM
hay guys and gals

i recently got myself my first Vic solo. i really like it but would like it more if it was a little more custom, so i was wondering if i could do some file work on the blade?

my issue isn't doing the work. its the tools i need. i have a dremel and was wondering if i could do some file work with a dremel? i cant really afford to buy more tools at the moment so if i can do it with that then yay. but if not then i may not bother for now.

thanks in advanced everyone

Nooooo!  :ahhh :ahhh  :ahhh
I'm a 5th degree Dremel grandmaster. I wear out a Dremel a year and cannibalize them for parts to keep the others running. Even I wouldn't try filework with them. You'll never get near the quality that Sid does without some diamond files, the the higher quality the better.

I've never done filework on a blade but I have carved a lot of titanium and platinum with diamond files for jewelry and you need that slow removal as well as the profile of the files to get the pattern right. A Dremel is a broadsword, you want a scalpel.
The Valtitan files are steel at 72 RC and they'll work too since Vic stainless is about 58.

 thats all true, i said "you can use it" of course you wont get the same results, i did it once and the result was not that bad, of course the pattern is very simple, you can´t achieve more elaborated paterns with a grinding wheel at 7,000rpm  :D

first you have to chose a pattern, you can just drawn two lines and let your imagination fly, use only basic shapes, round, oval, square, triangle and lines, buy a decent pack of diamond files of different shapes, i use round, half round, triangular, oval, the round and half round the most.

practice first in some scrap piece o metal, you can use something to measure the distance betwen each notch, in the vine pattern i first use the round file to start the oval sections, then with the half round i finish each section, then i fille the torns with the side of the half round file.

at the end you have to use sand paper to polish each notch, that depends of how coarse the file is. i use a polishing cotton wheel and withe compound to finish the blade.

anyway there are a lot of tutorials of the different patterns on youtube  :D

Thanks for the advice guys. Great pics. I only want to do some simple work just to give the blade a touch of class.
Where would I get some diamond files from and are they expensive? If not, ill pick some up.
Cheers

When you posted this in a different thread it made my jaw drop.  I didnt know filework could look so nice.  I'm still in the practice on scrap blade stage, but I'm enjoying learning this.  I've got lots more practice to get in before I can get one to look as nice are yours.  But it was this blade that inspired me, I think it's beautiful.

I would look for something cheap, like a carboot sale knife, or maybe an old shovel, or possibly even the frame of a junked computer (yes, it's aluminum, which is softer, so you have less margin of error) to practice on. Never tried anything like the pattern your showing, but that doesn't look that hard.

That is a phrase that always reminds of another- the easy way is always mined. :)

ive got some scrap to try on. also a really old and unusable gerber knife that can be attempt one after a practice. a friend of mine has done it on the spine of his house keys. it looks funky and he says it doesn't affect how the keys work.

i dont think ill do it on mine but you know  :P

Looking forward to see how it goes. I saw a youtube vid once showing the stages of knife blade file work, I can't access youtube right now (at work), but you might want to search and see what you find
