Wenger Zermatt
on: January 14, 2008, 06:04:42 PM
Anybody have one of these?

http://www.amazon.com/Wenger-Zermatt-Swiss-Army-Knife/dp/B0002YT5VO/ref=acc_glance_sg_ai_-2_1_tit?ie=UTF8&qid=1200313150&sr=1-51

Looks to be another of those oddball SAKs with 2 Phillips drivers.

Nice compliment of tools for a 4-layer knife, even though half-a-layer is taken up by a snaphook or carabiner or whatever they call it.

Of late, I'm becoming more of a Wenger fan.

I prefer the shorter overall length of Wengers, because they ride far more comfortably in my pocket than a full size Vic.

And I've started appreciating the Wenger can opener more and more lately.  Not only does it work better at opening cans, but it's a great tool for cutting tougher materials.  Like plastic blister packs or cardboard packaging, so you don't have to worry as much about overpenetration.

Of course locking screwdrivers are a good feature, and I've come to prefer the Wenger scissors also.

Zermatt - that looks wrong.  That's the same as the Matterhorn here.

No, I'm wrong.  The Matterhorn has the whistle.

I don't have one, but I'd buy one immediately if they'd replace the backspring phillips with a corkscrew.

Wenger's tool combinations make no sense to me.

Yeah - the 2 Phillips thing is a little confusing.  I have the EvoGrip S557 which is the smallest tool with a Phillips & a corkscrew that I see (along with the Evo S557).

They can be a little odd, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so :)

If they lost the silly serrated blade, I'd be very tempted by one :)

...and that's a shame.  They should include the in-line phillips in some 3 or 4 layer SAKs.  I would actually buy some then.  Since Wenger doesn't have the small screwdriver on the can opener like Victorinox, the in-line phillips is a must for me.

I'm not fond of the serrated blade either, but I would put up with it if I could just get the tools I want.

Wenger makes a number of models that I'd buy if I could substitute just one tool for another tool.

Usually it's a model with exactly every tool I want given its size - except they've included a $#%^%* corkscrew and left off the Phillips!  Very frustrating...

Of course, Vic produces plenty of models like that also.

Yes, I thought I'd miss the smaller screwdriver on the can opener but it's made for those clamshell packs.

So long as the knife has a Phillips, the smaller screwdriver on the can opener isn't that great a sacrifice.  Better in theory than in practice, because mine hardly ever get used.

On the other hand, I use the Wenger can opener frequently:
-blister packs
-cardboard packaging
-scoring before cutting
-nasty cutting jobs where I'd prefer to spare the knife
-digging holes or grooves in wood and other materials
-only very rarely does it open a can

Here are some old Wengers(and one new one) that I found. I also threw in a Vic Sport ratchet and a very nice SAK Eddie Bauer leather sheath.

Does anyone know anything about this knife? The large blade locks but has a release lever on top that you push down. I can't recall seeing this type of locking system on any kind of knife.

That is the blade locking system common on Wengers.  It is still used on current models.

It's called a PackLock and is available on many 85mm Wenger models.  Frankly, I love it.  It looks like it would be awkward but it's never gotten in the way when I have used it, and I edc'ed a model with that feature for almost ten years now.

Thanks, I am a Vic man and only buy a Wenger every now and then. All my recent Wengers haven't had locking blades on them. I thought that since this knife is at least 15 years old and has Eddie Bauer on it, it may have been something odd. I guess I need to pay more attention! :ahhh

I like it also. Since I don't buy many Wengers I had not seen it on any other knife in years. Time to my homework. I LOVE this site, great info. It has really refueled my interest in multitools and knives in general as it had waned in the past few years. It would kill you to know the things I have sold! :ahhh

Thanks to all for sharing your knowledge with me and others on this site.

Since I got my S557 I have tested the can opener against the one on my Vics.  On the plus side it cuts much stronger into a can with less force.  On the negative side it seems to collapse and close when you lift up.  That's a little annoying.  It is nice when you want to open the clamshell packages or as a box cutter.

I do like the smaller profile in my pocket.

How could they patent the can opener and Philips screwdriver? They don't look like new inventions, do they?

They have a patent on the locking mechanism.  Read Def's link in his post above to find out more.

I believe it's the locking mechanism of the screwdrivers that the patent refers to.  Push down on the screw, and the screwdriver locks in place.
