DMT's Magna Guide?
on: January 16, 2008, 03:44:53 AM
I checked out DMT's little video on their Magna Guide system http://www.dmtsharp.com/press/dmgef.htm  and liked what I saw. Small, easy to work, and I can get it at my job with a discount to around $25. :D I was going to go with the Sharpmaker but it's more $ (my job doesn't carry it) and though I don't have it yet, the Magna Guide seems easier to get great results. You can also swap out the fine/extra fine Diafold with another grit Diafold so there's plenty of options for this system.  Anyone use the Magna Guide?

No but I saw it after I bought my diafold sharpener.  The Sharpmaker is way too much money for something to sharpen pocket knives.  This looks very adjustable.  I wish the sold it without a diafold.  I already have one.  I have one with the 1200/2200 grit.  I do have a similiar Smith's sharpening guide and figured out how to rig my diafold with it.  Works nice.  The sharpest diamond grit I have for the Smith's is only 750 so it gave me a much finer edge.  I also picked up a pigskin Dunkle strop and some Yellowstone stropping compound.  That stuff really puts a polished razor's edge on.  All in all though it looks like a very good rig and you can get several grit combiniations for it.

I think you posted about getting the pigskin Dunkle strop and some Yellowstone stropping compound. That interested me and I will pro'lly end up getting the same one from the same place. :) I think the combination of the DMT Magna Guide and the strop will be a very, very sweet setup.

Once you finish with that strop you can literally shave with it.  The pigskin has less give to it and so doesn't tend to round the bevel.  Once you have a good sharp bevel you should never have to do anything to the edge but an ocasional stropping unless you really abuse it.  I got the Smith's at Lowe's.  The diamond Smith's elsewhere shows about $75 but Lowe's had it for about $25 but it has only two angles 20 and 25 degrees.  The DMT has more settings for about the same price range.

I've started to think of rebevelling the edge of my M21-14. I have found that it does draw when doing long cuts, pro'lly due to the almost-chisel bevel on it now. I'd like a sharper, straighter cut, but the way the edge is now is very strong. After I run it over with the DMT Magna Guide with the XF stone it may be more satisfactory so I'll wait until I do that.
