Can I improve a Maglite Solitaire?
on: April 29, 2012, 06:39:58 PM
I have a Solitaire, which has a bit of sentimental value(it was a freebee at my first motoGP).By now its pants in terms of performance. Is there anything I can do to bring it up to power with something like a Fenix E05?
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

No, but you can bring it up to a bit less than the E01's power with a led drop-in.

We had this thread a few days ago. There's a video of mine and a link to ebay sources of the dropin in that thread.

I've used the same module and it's not bad, certainly better than the standard bulb.  As you say mate it was more that my Solitaire was some sentimental value that I decided to get the LED for it, if it wasn't for that I'd of simply shelled out a couple more £ and gotten an E01.

Just so happens that I've got my Solitaire on my keys right this minute.

Amici,
That's what I've done, I've upgraded both Maglite Solitare torches from incandescent to LED as well as change their AAA batteries away from Alkaline to Lithium to positive results.

Cheers,
Serge

There's a running joke over on CPF that goes something like this...  "The wooden match, brighter and more run time than a Mag Solitaire".  :D

Someone's sig over there is "Solitaire? I've seen matches that are brighter with longer run times"

I tend to agree.

That said, ma_sha1 has done some incredible solitaire mods.

I would honestly just buy a E01 and throw that Solitaire in the trash. If you couldn't tell I don't have a good track record with the Solitaire. There customer service is excellent though. I really have no issue with Maglite and actually very much like them I just DO NOT like the Solitaire.

As Kirk said, sentimental value is key here. The Solitaire was my EDC light for years and although I have much better flashlights, I sometimes use it just cause I like it so much. It has a very solid body which can't be said for many newer flashlights but the weak output and flickering bugged me to no end. But after the LED upgrade it's a decent flashlight.

I too have a Solitaire, and this is a great idea. I was/am always a fan of maglites and I currently use a 2xaa mini with the Terralux kit. Since my Solitaire is also very old (15+years, I think?) I was also looking for a way to put out more oomph form it.

I will go this route for sure.
