Uninspired subject line
on: January 11, 2012, 07:15:09 AM
I've been on here a few weeks and have posted a couple times, but I haven't done an intro thread.

I'm a professional photographer/photojournalist with a specialty in auto racing, so an MT is something that is pretty much a necessity when working in the field. I also used to be pretty heavily into car modding and racing myself, and had, used, and lost many LMs in that scene.

These days, though, I enjoy the tools themselves (as well as knives, flashlights, etc...) as much as using them. I like having some sort of MT on me all the time, as part of my usual EDC, but I'm still looking for my ideal tool, which is harder than I'd thought. (Bigger than the Micra I carry now, lighter than the Wave I keep in my camera bag, more functional than the Juice.) I'm not so much collecting as going through tools until I find the right one. I really like seeing all the collectable tools on the collector forum here, though, especially the really exotic or vintage tools.

Anyway, I'm not a huge poster but I'll be around.

Welcome!

I too am a pro photog half my time, I keep a skeletool with a 5/16 he'd bit and a flat head bit in it so I can adjust stuff on location. The hex bit makes all the difference.
Why stop now?

Thanks for the welcome!

I'll see if I can put some pics somewhere I can link to them. I generally try to keep my real name (which is in my site URL) away from personal interest sites, so that they don't come up if I get googled.

That's a good idea with the hex bit in the skeletool. I keep my Wave in my camera bag, but I still haven't gotten the bit kit. One thing I've always liked about multitools is that they tend to have stubby, wide flat bits that are perfect for tripod plates, battery covers, and stuff like that.

I just bought an SOG S44, my first non-LM plier tool, to try for EDC. I'm probably going to swap the tools around a bit, since the knife is redundant for me (I carry a Benchmade folder), and a bladeless tool would be great on those occasions where I fly out and back with just a camera bag in the same day for certain events.  I like the tool complement for the most part, though, especially that I can have a file, which I find myself needing surprisingly often, without a wood saw, which I've never once used on an MT and which most tools with files usually have.

Welcome!  I have always had an interest in photography, but never actually got started.  Good luck finding your white stag MT, it's a long journey.

Thanks guys.

Haha, "white stag" MT. I'm cautiously optimistic about the Rebar at the moment, I really like the traditional-style inside-opening MTs. If the Rebar doesn't work out, I might just have to go find myself a nice PSTII to replace my long-lost one.

I too am anxiously awaiting the REBAR.  I think it may actually be my white stag.  We shall see!

I'm also a huge fan of the traditional style MT's.  While I have owned a ton of Wave's, surges, and skeletools, I just don't take to them as EDC tools because my stupid hands have a habit of opening the blades when I'm using the other tools.

The PST II is a neat tool, I really must add one to my collection.

Try also the Victorinox Spirit plus:

Welcome to the forum Max!

The Spirit is definitely on my list. Fry's has it for $60 and I'm majorly tempted every time I'm in there looking at other stuff.
