Cold Steel 2012 models
on: January 14, 2012, 06:52:58 PM
Whatever people think (I like them) Cold Steel comes out with some unusual items, (as does CRKT) that I never new I needed/wanted untill I see them.

http://www.coldsteel.com/newitems.html

Now I really need a Sword and a Shield..

Their survival knives, if found at half the RRP (as per usual) could provide an interesting alternative to Moras.

Their Hunter models look decent, though I dislike plastic Stag (Especially at the RRP they advertise)

I like Cold Steel and I don't care who knows it!  :P

Yes their marketing is over the top and Lynn may have issues, but none of that takes away from the fact that Cold Steel makes a good quality product, and they make things that few others do, and at reasonable prices- for the most part anyway.

The wifi here at the airport kind of sucks and it's taking forever to load that page (it may also be blocked, and security staff may be on their way to apprehend me!) so I'll have to look at it later.  Sadly I won't be seeing any of the new products at SHOT as I think Cold Steel is still boycotting the show.  I have to say that I miss their booth- it was always a great place to stop by with lots of interesting things to look at.

I've found Cold Steel products fine too. I've only ever tried their low end stuff, but I've been very happy with them. I've only ever tried their fixed blades too, their folders have no appeal for me

Their survival knives, if found at half the RRP (as per usual) could provide an interesting alternative to Moras.

Those survival knives do look interesting I'll agree - but the Finn Bear (their previous mock Puukko) had a hollow ground bevel, not flat. That might reccur here, and might affect some people's choice. They could have boosted it slightly by adding a less uniform surface to the handle as well as the O'rings. To me when I see those I don't see added grip - I see five potential firelighters

I feel the same.  The only cold steel stuff I like is the cheapo machetes.  I use and abuse those 20 dollar things for yardwork, then file sharpen and repeat.  I love the kukri machete, it just works and I dont cry if I get nicks in it.   I dont own any of there higher end knives, but honestly the odd website advertising turns me off.  Videos of fat guys hacking at rope is not a way to sell me a knife.

I bought their knives before I saw any of their advertising not because of it.
I have seen some of it now and I find it entertaining.
Whether the company owner is overweight or shouts a lot etc. is not really a factor in any of my knife buying (I am not going to date him  :D ).
I have not met any of the knive companies managers, nor do I especially want to, so I have no idea what they are like, I just look at their knives.
Some of the cold steel products look good to me , some do not as with all the knife companies but I do not lose sleep loving or hating a company.

Cold Steel has some interesting designs (the new micro and mini recons all look good) but way too "tacticool" for me across much of the lineup.

I've always wanted a samburu spear for hiking stick, now with the new viking axe, I want to mount the spear head on the tip of axe handle. :mn:  :D

While they might have some decent products, I have to support Ashley on this topic. Most CS products just are not worth the money. There are many better knives in that price range. And, while some CS products just look great, they are a pain in the smurf when used. It seems there is the choice between ugly beater knives and nice useless knives.

I feel underwhelmed with the new items; the only one that really caught my eye was the Survival Edge, until I noticed it used o-rings(!) on the exterior for grip, as opposed to actual texture, and that the grip was hollow (really not a fan), and the price would, even at realistic street prices, let me get two to three Moras for the same cost.

At least I can get a small shield now, though.  ::)

I own quite a few of CS's product line, both new and old. For what they are they are good knives.....but I would never pay full going price for any of their stuff as it is usually overpriced. All of my CS stuff was had below the average going price. A bunch of my older stuff was had WAY below what they were going for (going out of business sale).

Anyway, I am no fan of LT. And I find their "Test Videos" a joke. But alot of their stuff is actually pretty good quality, particularly the Japanese and Taiwan made products.

It's funny that Mora is mentioned in this thread. As I have used CS's products and found most of them quite decent, I can't speak for their newest additions like the Survival Edge.......but having owned a Mora as well and used it a bit I can say it is likely I will never buy another Mora again. While very inexpensive, given their following, I have to say I have been quite unimpressed with Mora. And to go the same route I'd rather buy a CS Finn Bear than another Mora.
