One-hand on a Juice
on: January 18, 2008, 05:23:16 PM
I've been EDC'ing my Juice S2 this week.  I noticed how easy it is to one-hand the can opener on the one side with the tab on it -

& that got me thinking of how I could modify the blade side to one-hand it.  There's already a cutout:

So I thought about a way to add a thumb stud or even a dot of solder to the blade in the cutout to allow one-handing.  My only concern is that it would interfere with cutting since it will stick out of the blade & not allow the blade to slice through something.  The best would be a cutout in the blade, but it's not really tall enough to access with a thumb for that.

Ideas anyone?

I thought often about cutting away the scale just enough to accommodate a thumb stud higher on the blade.  If you don't beat me to it, I may just try it some time.  A one handed opening Juice seems like a good idea to me as it doesn't look "tactical."  The bright colors are more reminiscent of a regular box cutter than a dangerous weapon.

I also thought about just switching the scales around since I don't know if the notch on the other side is necessary to get at the screwdrivers.  That would allow for a thumbstud to be mounted higher.

I've never taken a Juice apart. Wonder how much of a pain those rivets would be?

They seem like a giant pain in the butt to me.

Probably more so than trying to drill through the blade anyway.

Then the alternative is to just cut the existing scale or put the stud in the middle.

That's what I thought, only I was thinking a small stud maybe 1/3 of the way down the blade from the pivot.

From the picture it looks like the back of the blade overlaps the scale a tad.  Could you somehow put on more of a thin lip that sticks out just past the scale, rather than a "stud" per se?

After being in the basement and playing with the dremell. I found the bit I was looking for it is a metal cutting rasp. It is round and has teeth that cut into metal. If ya chucked it in a drill press you could just mill the section of the scale away and put a nice round finnish on it. I just wish my camera did not break I could post a pic of the blade.

Been pondering this one-handed-Juice concept a lot lately. (It's such a great idea!) Carving out the soft aluminum handle scale is no big deal. The real dilemma is the stainless steel liner underneath.

The liner has been skeletonized by Leatherman to save weight. Notching into it very far would cut through one of the "columns" of the framework, perhaps weakening it when using the pliers under heavy load. It would also leave some pokey, unsupported columns in the cut out area.

(hope that makes sense)

Yeah, I don't think notching the existing scale will work.

I also don't like messing with switching the scales from the other side since we'd have to deal with the rivets.

The lip stud makes sense although the backspring has enough resistance that it may not have enough leverage if it's in the usual place we'd put a thumbstud.

The stud in the middle where the notch is now is no good since it will stop the blade from cutting through something (like cheese or an apple or leather).

I'm stymied boys.  I don't know if this is do-able

Sorry for the really crappy photo but the Didgi died and this is with the phone.

This was done very simply. I chucked a sanding drum for the Dremel tool in my drill press.

Then I put the tool on  ablock of wood.

Then I just alligned the bed of the drill press into the scale and avoided the bottom of the tool.

Very slowly I had the press go and I gently guided the tool to what I wanted. The stainless liner was no problem, however using only about 1/16 of the sander drum I went through 2 of them.(no prob. only about 2$ worth) Top and bottom.

Now lets get some studs and tap this pig!!!!!!!! :ahhh

Good job hawkchucker!

Did you cut all the way through the column of the stainless liner, or stop short?

John, I have a few cheap knives that I keep around to harvest things like thumbstuds.  PM me with your address again and I'll get one or more off to you in the next few days.

Oh, and good luck drilling through that blade!   :D

This seems to be the smallest one I can find in a one stud system.

Def I will certainly take you up on this!!!

I will however have this drilled by one of my workers. I figure it will take at least 3 bits and a very slow drillpress and a ton of lube.

But I think It will work. If not well I just skunked a Juice. :ahhh

Skunked tools are a by product of tool modding.  The good thing is, you won't be affecting the tool's function, just the aesthetics, and if it really bothers you then toss it in the parts bin for future mods!

I'll have a look and see what studs I have- might be best to wait until you see the studs I have available before drilling though.
