Slim Jim knife

SOG also showed us their new Slim Jim knives.  These are assisted opening knives with a lockback mechanism and a secondary lock to keep them open or closed.  They are pretty neat technology, but perhaps the most striking feature of them is that they are almost paper thin!







It's rare to find a knife this slender, and impossible to find one that's assisted opening!

I'd say this would be a user.  It feels solid and I can't remember the MSRP, but I'm pretty certain it was reasonable.  Maybe Bob will fill in the gaps here.

You know what, I don't remember.  I will be near SOG again sometime soon and I'll see if I can find out if the thumbstud can be switched.

The Slim Jim knives are indeed pretty cool. In addition to the features Grant mentioned, they also have this little slider lock switch along the back. (see below) When slid forward, it keeps the blade from opening accidentally.

Also, once the blade is opened, the switch will block the lock release if you want.

Not unlike the Blink/Twitch which have similar features, albeit a bit thicker.

Great concept - interested to hear if the click can be switched over too.

Oh I like!  I'm not sure why, but thin folders appeal to me.  I carry a black SOG Access Card 2.0 right now, and its a sweet little blade that you barely notice carrying.  VG10 Steel... mmmm

I imagine they might start to dig into your hand a bit if you were doing a bunch of heavy cutting. But for what little they give up to a conventional size folder in cutting ability, they more than make up for the other 99% of the time a knife is just riding around at your belt.

Sometimes I have difficulty with the Flash II opening the blade, if my grip and thumb aren't perfectly in place correctly.  In these cases, I fumble with the knife to get it to open.  To me, this may just be I need the thumb tab moved slightly out some...

Not exactly that.  SOG's SAT system tends to lead to blade play down the line, and most of the time it's unfixable - either too tight to open or loose enough to open but noticeable side to side play in lockup.  A function of having the assist mechanism in the pivot.  I've had some SOG assisted openers that I've loved the designs of (Flash, Flash 2, Twitch) but between that and being told it's not covered under warranty by SOG has kinda soured me on their knives altogether.

I'd take Kershaw's torsion bar or a leaf spring a la CRKT or Benchmade any day of the week.
