LM budget tool. wingman VS kick
on: January 18, 2012, 02:36:14 AM
in no the obvious differences between the wingman and kick but my question is what would you get as a budget tool?

i like the kick, it has a good tool set for me. its light, good quality and a good price. but im tempted by the wingman i like scissors, combo blade and spring loaded pliers but the kick has a better screw driver set.

i don't know what i want so if you great people could tell me what you would get if you could only get one, as a budget tool. what would it be? and why?

thanks in advanced all.

I'm not big on spring loaded pliers, unless they're on a Squirt, personally.  I just can't wrap my hands around a Wingman or Sidekick as easily as I can a Kick, so my vote goes for the latter.  It helps that you can typically pick up new Kicks now for $20 or less, too.  Plus, too, the tiny file is just that:  tiny.  At least, if you have an inclination to do so, you can mod a Knifeless Fuse or Blast file into a Kick.

Kick gets my vote because
1)I've had a Wingman and didnt like it
2)Kick is UK legal,Wingman isnt.
3)Kick has great modding potential(see 50ft-trads Round House Kick,or my Modded Fuse).
4)Whilst I havnt handled a Kick,I have the Fuse and Blast(much the same chassis),and they feel far better quality per pound at UK prices.
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

interesting that so far the kick is getting more attention. i though the wingman would be more popular.

i like the fact that the kick is uk legal. but im not going to try any mods so that's not a factor for me. also i own a blast so i don't know whether to get a wingman just for something different.

if i get a kick ill have to get a pocket clip for it.

i think so far im swaying towards the kick.

more opinions please guys.  :tu: thanks

Not handled the Wingman, but I do love my Kick. :tu:  A little word of warning though, the blade on the Kick is thinner and shorter than the one on your Blast.  It's not a big issue but it was a surprise for me when I first got mine. :)  Slightly more disappointing is that the tool tend to clump. :-\

yeah i just watched ColinOutdoors video review on the kick and the tool clumping has really put me off to be onist. i got the supertool 300 last month and thats the biggest disappointment about that for me.

thats tipped me back towards the wingman.

does the fuse clump? and can you put a pocket clip on it? i want a tool for pocket carry so light, slim-ish and pocket clip.

do you not like the kick because of a bad experiences or was it just not a pleasant tool to carry?

another good point about the kick/fuse is they will stop making those befor the wingman so it would make more scence to get one of those first(because lets face it, i will get both eventually  :D)

Unless you are worried about the locking blades since you ARE in the UK, I would go with the fuse as well.  Locking blades plus scissors!  If not, then definitely the kick.  I just prefer the compact utility and lines of the traditional style tools, and the kick is better quality IMHO than the wingman.

i do like the fuse but i want the tool of choice to have a pocket clip. so  i think im going with the kick so far.

I went through this but was put off the wingman/sidekick due to members comments not being very posotive on it, plus a few QC issues, i went for a paratool as wanted a uk legal MT plus can be modded easy, and very different from my usual LM's ive had, but i do like the look of the wingman etc as have a wave look, but sadly not as small as i would of liked and drivers not very long,  :-\

Nope, no clumping on the Fuse.  Sadly no pocket clip either. :-\

its such a shame. if the fuse had a pocket clip or if the kick didnt clump they would be even greater tools.

is there anything that can be done to prevent tool clumping?

My vote is for the Kick. The Wingman really isn't a a bad tool for what it is, an entry-level tool. As a lefty though I'm not crazy about the OHO blade, and I'm not a big fan of sprung pliers. The Kick has a more solid feel to it. I carry a dedicated OHO blade with me in addition to my multi, so no problem there. I always have my Executive on my keys, so I'm not losing scissors when I go with the Kick. I just ordered a pocket clip for my Kick, and I'm sure I'll carry it more now.

Yes, get a Kick.

I got my hands on a friends Wingman and Sidekick and was really let down by the quality. And I also HATE spring loaded pliers in any legitimate sized tool.

The MTo way, is if in doubt buy both ... but get a Kick first, then mod it ...

... then realise you don't need a Wingman, that bad moustache might be contagious

i don't feel confidant enough to do any moding. but it looks like ill go with the kick. maybe anther time ill get a wingman. but i think a BO blast and charge tti is next on the list.

thanks for everyone's opinion so far. there still time to change my mind though, so if you like the wingman more, now is the time to speak up

Depends on what you plan for it. The kick is a much sturdier tool.

Kick's do indeed have great potential for simple mods.

Kicks are so simple to mod!My Blast mods were done in under 30minutes per side!Much easier than SAK mods!

I just used two set of small pliers (PST's IIRC  ;)).  They go together like this:

The couple I've done were all set up this way with the 'screw' (B) going in from the right as you look down on the tools.  You hold the 'post' (A) still and undo the 'screw'.

Is it possible to use the fittings A & B, as shown by Gareth and use the Kick one with the hole for the pocket clip  do you get what I mean? you want the pocket clip but like the fuse, is that right ish?
