Wingman slop?
on: March 10, 2012, 09:01:43 PM
Hey all, so I was playing around with my new wingman and I noticed that when the tool was closed up, I can move the handles, laterally?
Not sure how to explain so here's a picture

Is this normal? Is anyone else having this problem?

Most if not all  MT will have that, since there's nothing holding them together on this end.

My Wingman moves laterally at the ends as well...but not as much as yours seems to move.  Every tool is going to be slightly different though.

Amici,
Once again, it brings back traumatic memories for those who disliked the original Leatherman Wave...

Cheers,

The wingman seems to have more play than most, but both my ST300 and Charge do the same thing to different degrees.  Interestingly my SOG Powerlock has zero wiggle because of the gears.

My Powerlock has a little wiggle. My Wingman has a little more than the Powerlock.

I just got a new Wingman in the mail today, and it does have some movement laterally, but it is not easily moved, and it is not loose at all.

Most if not all  MT will have that, since there's nothing holding them together on this end.

This also gives you an idea of how tight the tolerance between the pivot screws and the frame is.  If you were engineering a tool, you can reduce the play by making the frame thicker around the pivot screws. but that adds weight and size.

On another note, since the wingman came out, I've always wanted to take the sprung plier head off and put it on my skeletool.  Does anybody know the dimensions of the inner and out diameters of the rings on the plier head?

My Swisstools don't do that. *shrugs*

But comparing Victorinox to Leatherman is just not fair at all.  :pok:

So I  took out my OLD and beat-up Original Leatherman Supertool and  it doesn't do that either. It moves just ever so slightly , maybe a millimeter at most.

So yeah, your new Leatherman has slop. No doubt.

My Wingman does that too. My Fuse (I have been conducting an experiment between the two for about 2.5 months now) doesn't.

The Wingman was only $20, so I'm not disappointed.

My wingman has no play in it yet.Im sure over time it will settle in with more use. Its a nice tool for the money and fits my hand well.Leatherman should bring the erganomics of the wingman/sidekick/skeletool to full sized tools.
