Another pretty yellow one!

Note the saw, pliers, OH blade, file and Mike Horn style awl!

That's the first Ranger I've been seriously tempted by. I like that a lot

I thought I was done with rangers other than the old #13 I need, but this baby is coming home.

Looks like it's an evolution of the Mike Horn for the home ranch.

From what I've seen this would be the best Ranger for (right handed people) hiking/camping. Good size OHO knife, the most capable saw found on a MT, moderate sized pliers, file and awl for running repairs and a can opener too all in a high-vis, high-grip wrapper. No evil liner locks either (or at least the ones where you have to put your fingers under the blade to unlock :twak: ).

Coupled with a Compact for scissors and scale tools and use in "public" areas as you pass though those quaint villages ... perfect! Well except for a pocket clip that is  :P

Yes, I think I'll be getting one of these  :tu:

Is there a backspring tool on the other side or just the awl?

This is one of those great little moments when your so glad you just waited :D a while ago I asked Neil if it would be possible to loose a blade and add a saw to the Wenger Mike Horn, not an easy job, anyway ta da  :tu:

Is there a backspring tool on the other side or just the awl?

Also have that question. Usually Wengers carry a lot less on the back than Vics, though.

All in all, I actually liked this model.  :tu:

The price is painful- I am pretty certain Wenger said MSRP was $175.

I like the design, but the price is insane. I can get vers nice MT with better pliers for 70 dollars, I will not pay more than that for a SAK style MT. I guess the same tool made by Victorinox would be half the MSRP.

It's almost the same size as a Mike Horn.  It's just got a saw instead of a the serrated blade.

It does not have the special handles or any extra royalties attached to it.  I suspect like the MH and the SUI-1, that we'll see it closer to the $100 mark and maybe even under on some sales.

Have these surfaced anywhere yet? I mean it's not like they've got to wait for "new" parts  ::)

Why does the Mike Horn have the second serrated "emergency blade" rather than a wood saw?

Good question.  I have tried to use the serrated blade as an ersatz saw and it doesn't do well.  The edge is too "delicate" (for lack of a better word).  That's why I'm looking forward to the new 90 (assuming reasonable price).

From my experience, the tools all function very well--probably the best 1/4 bit driver ever in a multitool.  The file is a little short but it has excellent bite.  Surprisingly, the scales are extremely tough on the MH ranger.

It was made to spec of Mike Horn if I recall, whose activities probably has more use for serrated blade than saw.

Here its:

I think I prefer the 90 over the 88

I see the 90 as being the perfect hiking tool, which means I could live with the smaller file, no bottle opener and losing a layer. Whilst I think the 90 would be great for hiking/backpacking, the 88 with the extra layer and full sized file would be a little harder for me to place ... maybe. I think if I wanted a file like that, chances are I'd be wanting some pretty hefty pliers too

The 88 still looks like an excellent bit of kit though  :tu:
