My new DIY M21-14 Razel!
on: December 30, 2011, 02:39:30 AM
After handling a CRKT folding Razel and a Ringed Razel I really wanted one. My problem was one many of us have of already owning knives no longer seeing use and money being very tight.  :(  I really dug those Razels and started thinking about the knives I have laying around at home. So I got my CRKT M21-14 out and cut off about 0.5" off the blade. I cut angled back from edge to spine to mimick a Razel. I then slowly ground down the chisel edge to get it thinned down a little. Lastly, I put a slight edge on the chisel and sharpened the main edge. Believe it or not I'm happy as hell because it works great! I've already used it to remove some h/d staples, a few stickers, scraped some old glue off a window, hammer a few panel nails, and cut some Lithuanian Rye bread for lunch. :D  It's a lot handier than I thought it would be!  I actually cut a few more things today and not once did the knife fail to do what I wanted. So if you ever thought of getting a Razel I wholeheartedly tell you to go get one! Or, do what I did and revive one of those knives laying in your desk drawer by making your own Razel. I think you'll be surprised all the utility it affords.   :tu:

PS, when I get cells for my camera pics will be forthcoming.

I get the hint! :)      I actually stopped carrying it because the top of the blade was tearing up my pocket. I admit I didn't think about that when I modified the blade. BUT!......  I did buy a CRKT Folding Razel  (4030)!   8)  Note, this is not the stubby Razel folder. This is its bigger brother.  :)  The ergos are great, the blade length and shape is perfectly adequate, and I've used it a good deal and the edge has held up surprisingly very well. Don't know if I got lucky or CRKT has their heat treat perfected on 8Cr13MoV. The only downer was no tip-up carry, unless you use the inline clip. I removed the inline clip because it irritated me when handling the knife. I may craft something for where the inline clip was so I can restore tip-up carry. All in all though, CRKT did a very good job with this knife.

I agree.  I also removed the dorky little pocket clip.  The knife is a stout utility knife.  Tough as nails.

Definitely. It's just a great knife that doesn't have a traditionally shaped blade, yet it's been able to do everything I've asked of it. A review will be forthcoming. Just gotta find the time and my camera.
