Love that Symph!

Tell me, could that have a lanyard ring added and the reamer replaced with a small blade or the small nail file?

Regards, Jon

I'm not Syph, but I'm sure that's a possibility. Keyring or no keyring is always an option, and I'm quite sure the small blade shouldn't be a problem as well ;)

Small blade is a direct swap in, it just needs a tiny washer.  The nail file from a cadet needs a new spring with thicker rest to work properely (so it costs more) but does work.

Oh baby, I was restocking on screws and found that knifekits has Ti screws now... 2 buck each but I gotta get some for Ti urban pioneer builds... :D

They are a shallow socket style so they will still fit flush with the scales too. mmmm...  They can be anodized too!

So Syph, what is the likelihood of you producing something like this one day? Cause I would go broke if you did lol

Haven't seen that Hanes in a while. The idea for that actually originated from this forum.

I'm going to do either this frame-lock or a liner lock to my work EDC Electrician. Why you ask?...

Because the blade closed on my finger a couple of days ago. Sure, I should have been more careful and not trying to plunge-cut with a slippy. But that's not the point!!  It bit me and needs to be fixed.
Lucky the blade was sharp and it was a very clean cut, it has knit back together nicely with the help of a couple of wound closure strips. But smurfing hell it bled.

I just picked up a couple of cheap NIB Electricians, so I can definitely rip one apart and have a go at making a lockblade mod.  >:D

The thing that concerns me slightly is the strength (or possibly hardness) of the aluminium. You'd be jamming a hardened steel blade tang in to a relatively soft and flimsy aluminium scale/lock thing. Call me a pessimist but I can't see that being reliable for long.

Edit: fwiw, I've trimmed down a bit of mild steel of about the same thickness as the Alox scale with my Wave's knife. Not a nice thing to do with it but needs must and it did it.

I'm not sure but I think it is a whole new back made from titanium.

Yes his front scale is orange g10, back is Ti.  The Ti is bead blasted with a fine size glass bead to get that finish.  Its been on my list of todos ever since I saw it. :D

I dont care for the detent ball method to retain a blade in closed position, so I think a weak backspring might as well be there to retain it closed.  Unless you want a one hand open locking blade then you wouldnt want any backspring.

There has to be a spring there, the awl is on the other side :)

I'm thinking of going with a Ti liner-lock between the blade and scale. I'll be looking at reshaping the tang to work with the lock and may change the rest on the spring to reduce the snap to a minimum level without effecting the awl too much. Think I will be doing a bit of mockup work with some old blades.
I knew that borked blade from the Electrician-Plus would come in handy for something.

I'm guessing he made his own backsprings same as Robert does. He also made a new blade for it. The one he uses isn't a Vic one.

Is it possible to put the combo tool and large blade (93mm) across from each other on a single layer? Sorry, I'm sure this is a noob question that has been asked before I just can't seem to find an answer out there. It seems like this is the way the Bantam and Compact is set up, and so it should work. However I didn't know if jumping up to the 93mm would cause an issue.

Thanks for the info guys!

Also just have to drill out the pivot to 3mm if your peening it.

My thoughts exactly.  So many people asked me for orange anodize but I had to settle for cerakote.  Hard anodized orange will wear much better.  :D

Well this sure has been a long time coming but here it is... 91mm alox prototype super tinker:D

I put this together to answer 3 questions.

1.  Does it feel like an upgrade to the plastic scales, does it feel like alox?

A.  YES!! It feels so nice and solid.  Great snap on all the tools and it feels aloxy!

2.  Will the 1/8 pivots work on the backtool layer tools?

A.  YES!  I drilled out all backtools to 1/8th inch and that worked no problem.

3.  Will hiding that 4th pin work out ok?

A.  YES, no problem there and actually I dont even have to drill into the scales for it to work.

This I put together with stock liners, but I will redo in brass for a better look.  I will take assembly pics when I rebuild it to show how it all builds up.  But for now here are the prototype pics!
