Syph, I have a question for you.

Its part idle curiosity & part genuine interest but its been bugging me all day and I have looked though the thread but I didn't see anything to answer it.

What is the largest 84mm SAK you can practically make? For example could you make something like a 5 layer ranger or even a 84mm champion or swisschamp?

If you had the 84mm size parts you can slap as many together as you like.  If you mean, take them from the 91mm size then no, alot of them wouldnt fit very well, like pliers, mag / phillips etc.

Wenger parts can also be used,.but many many recruits will need.to be sacrificed fo this for their backsprings. Two examples are the 84mm huntsman PTR made and.the uber cadet with pliers and more by Steve. Scribs may have done.some.as.well .

So are you saying a Wenger 85mm part will fit on a vic 84? JR

Yes 85 wenger will fit with modifications. I've done 85 pliers in a 84 frame. Some work but yes.

Ok, I ran a search & re-read some of the earlier posts and I'm hooked.

Smurf you all!!  :twak: :twak:

I've just GOT to get one now. :ahhh

But before I go any further, Syph are you still doing 84mm alox mods? I can't remember seeing anything one way or the other.

If so are you able to take orders?

Thanks for your time.

Nope all done with 84 alox.  The scales are annoyingly thin to work with.  I like the 93mm alox as it can be countersunk nicely and maintain good frame rigidity.

Ive got a full brass conversion of an 84 right now, but that is the last one in the queue.  I dont buy or stock the parts any longer.

Process updates!   :tu:

Still waiting on hard anodized orange... Im starting to think their dye isnt good, its never taken this long for a hard anodize run.

I just dropped off springs for heat treat at an awesome local place for heat treat in vacuum!  Good price and 2 day turnaround!  its 5 minutes from my house!

I talked to the owner about a DLC run next.. not cheap and they have a minimum cost, but if I include enough parts I think I can get the cost per SAK to a reasonable amount.  Much nicer than BO on stainless by a long margin though.  If I include 20 spartans to sell after to help supplement the DLC cost I think that can work.

The problem though is that doing the moving parts ones I dont think is an easy option.. like scissors.  So I could take the scissors apart and re-rivet, or not have them available.... I wonder how hard re-rivetting would be, maybe a test on an old pair of scissors is in order.

Im pretty excited now to have local electroplater, local waterjet and local heat treat / DLC.  Now I just want to find a local shop for surface grinding and batch tumbling and Im set to make up whatever I need.  :D

Glad to hear about all this good news!! If you don't mind me asking, how much more are we talking in regards of the DLC?

I'm still impressed on how well organized you were able to get the whole SAK moding thing. May I also ask if you're going to make more of those custom blades, now that you have a local HT?

I have done one set of scissors with a redo on the rivet. The old style with the brass rivet. It works fine :).

Those look great.
So would someone be able to buy a knife from you and then by other scales to swap out colors on demand?

If I could just buy the scales I could sell scales on their own too, but I only get them from the knives, so if I sold off a bunch of scale sets Id be left with lots of tools and no scales.  :D

For the 91mm size when I make alox for those I will sell just the scales.  Also if I make 93mm alox ribbed, I would sell those on their own as well.

Scale swapping is pretty easy on 3 layer mods and smaller.  Larger that that it gets really hard to compress the springs to get the scales on.  I made a special tool to do this.

Oh one other update I forgot, regarding stripping the stock scales.  I mentioned I use a 30% solution of NaOH right now and its a nasty process.  Well I was able to buy some commerical grade stripper that doesnt attack aluminum at all like NaOH does.  That means the soak time isnt as critical and less risk of scale damage.

Im doing a run of black hard anodize next and what I want to try is to do the nail polish over the red part of the scale trick to preserve the red, then use this nicer stripper to remove all the anodize on the rest of scales.  If that works I'll end up with some nice HAIII black scales with red inner shields and that should look pretty cool.   :D

I was going to try.  I dont know how precisely I can apply the nail polish, but I do have a large magnifier for electronics work.

The stripper I got is phosphoric and chromic acid mix.  They use it heated but I was going to try it room temp.  It should work still but slower.  We'll see.  :D

Cutting or stamping a template on paper or tape may assist in more precise and speedy application of nail lacquer onto the shield prior to stripping. :)
