Lots of options with Ti scales.  Polished, tumbled, colored.  The scales can be peen assembled, or drilled out for screws/pivots.  With my BO spartan modding I showed that the stock liners anodize fine, so I can get those colored in red/black and make a brass option as well.   :tu:  The scales can be textures on my mill, or slots milled for T&T.... Lots more moddin ahead!

What thickness are they?  Same as alox scales?

Its just about the same as alox 93 for thickness and yep its grade 5.  Pure Ti isnt good for much except jewlery.

E-mail sent. I was curious if the end of the "swing" arm (or "free" arm) on the scissors in a Classic SD could be made into an eyeglass size Phillips screwdriver. I tried holding it the way you would if you were using it in that fashion and I believe it would work.

I think the SD version of the Classic is probably more useful than the regular model, but I'm not a fan of having a flathead screwdriver without a Phillips to go with it. Is this something that could be done?

I also thought about adding a bottle opener with Phillips to a Classic SD similar to the one on the Mini-Champ (instead of doing the scissor mod). Is that possible?

I was unaware of the Rambler. I think I'll get one of those. Thanks.

I still would like to know if the free arm on the scissors in the Classic SD could be made into a Phillips. I like the Classic for keychain carry, but like I mentioned, I would like to get a Phillips into the mix if I can.

Its possible, but that would be pretty tricky to get it just right by hand.  Im not sure the metal would hold up well either being made so thin.  Definitely better if you can mix and match stock parts to get a model you want.

Sounds like you need a Drifter

http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Victorinox+Drifter

Reprofile the nail file tip to fit the screws you want, or just leave it alone.

The Flat tip is good for No.2 Phillips, the nail file is good for No.1 Phillips, and the Phillips is good for No.1 and No.0 Phillips

Interesting. I wasn't aware of the Drifter or that the nail cleaner & flathead could be used on certain sizes of Phillips screws. Thanks.

I was working on two 93mm mods today, one on a stock scaled copper, the other my hard anodized black.   I took a comparison pic of the backside of them together.  That rough part on the stock scales, and sharp edge so prone to chipping drives me nuts.  I can make the springs and liners beautiful, but I cant do anything about the appearance of stock scales.

Im never 100% happy delivering a mod with stock scales except silver you don't notice chipping so much much on those.

Ya I know they are mass produced and stamped out, so its inevitable the edges are like that.  If someone was to hand finish all the edges it would probably add alot to the cost.

Ya I put so alot of effort into each part its very unsatisfying to finish the job with stock scales.  Really though its just the colored ones where its so noticeable.  I dont have an issue with stock silver.

I'll take a comparison pic of a stock black alox and mine next and you can really see the difference.

Did you ever put the G10 liners into a finished/partially finished model.  They looks most interesting.

Roberto I am confused by this SAK.

I see on a lot of your creations a inline phillips across from the two opening layer tools. On this one though you have the inline phillips across from just the bottle opener?

Does this leave empty space and could this be a combo tool instead of the bottle opener.

Last bust very much not least I have decided this is the one I want. Well with a pocket clip added and a combo tool if possible. Oh and a nail file instead of the awl.

So pretty much nothing like this lol.

They suck.  I wont use them on a SAK and generally it was a big waste of money.  Not strong enough and cant be finished to a high enough level.  Also.. its plastic really and putting that on alox is a downgrade.  So I will stick to metals only, brass is the clear winner for me as its strong and pretty.

That one is opener and phillips takes 0.105" of width on a single backspring.  There is a 0.020" washer with the cap lifter to fill out the width.

The triple tool layer is a wider layer at 0.170" with dual backspring.   So if you dont need the can opener it saves 0.065".

Ok last question. I know when you are answering my noob questions you are not building sweet Alox SAKs.

So the bottle opener on the above SAK could be replaced with a combo tool?

Combo tool / phillips on one layer could work.  The combo tool is VERY thin though and not a good replacement for the normal openers.  It bends very easy so I would only recommend that IF you only want to use it for can and bottle opener, and not a screwdriver/pry tool.  That is why the phillips and dual opener mod is so popular.

Will your 91 ti scales be milled for the toothpick and tweezer?

I'll for sure try a set to see how it goes.  It'll be a manual operation so I'll have to make a jig to make it repeatable.  Tweezers are easy as the slot is actually pretty thin, and since tweezers want to spring open, then hold themselves in well.  The toothpick is more annoying as the slot is much deeper and retention relies more on friction and if it was up to me I think I'd skip it for those reasons.

I got a nice surprise today in the mail.  My prototype 91mm alox showed up today.  I had a shop make me up 10 sets as a test. Wide alox pattern to ruduce the machining cost a bit.  They need some hand finish work before I send off for hard anodize, but they should be interesting at least.  :D
