Hey Syph. I suspect it’s somewhere in this thread but could you compare the weight of a 91mm mod to a comparable 93mm...for example a Climber with TI scales to a stock Pioneer X

The 91 would be lighter.  All the backsprings alone have less metal than the 93 versions.

And I can now finally confirm a titanium backspring works great!  Only took 5 versions.

Those are the photos I wanted to see - ie with spring

Fantastic

Better still you made your own - I thought that you'd re-use an existing one from an 84mm

So you've put a wee brass nub in there to make the opening smooth - Correct?
I remember you saying that TI does not glide too well.

The fascinating thing for me is that the body of the scissors fit in the 84mm frame and it's just the tang that gets changed
- Is that correct ? ???
Does make you wonder why Vic stopped this option !!

Anyway - .... Awesome   :tu:

Very cool!

I think it was here that I read Ti stiffens over time. If this is the case it'll be interesting to see how long it takes before that change can actually be felt.

If that brass nub is there to help with the Ti/steel interaction, did you also do something where the scissors slide along the spring while closing, or is that minimal enough that it doesn't effect functionality?

Once again, fantastic work Syph  :tu:

Wow. This is awesome. I’m even more excited about the custom backspring than the 84mm scissors. My favorite part of the 93mm era was all the non-standard tool layouts that allowed for true customizations...this seems to have been lost a little bit with the 91mm mods and my layman’s understanding is that the 91mm backsprings are the big limiting factor. For example, could a slightly wider saw spring accommodate the in line awl at the other end, could a spring be made to accommodate an opener on one side and the small blade on the other, could some ingenious design be created to put 58mm tools on a 91mm (a small scissor that doesn’t take a whole layer!). If it were possible, I know just the guy for the job. Here’s to hoping!!!

Oh, having a limited budget I would love an 84 alox deluxe tinker with the small blade instead of the file!
I wonder if the saw and metal file could be cut down for an 84 alox craftsman, or ranger, mountaineer or ranger.

I ordered some proper oil impregnated bronze for the bearing surface of the spring.  Im going to wait until I get that to finish up the project.  Its intended for a bearing surface under load which is exactly what I need.  And its self lubricating.  They make it by sintering bronze powder into a matrix then infusing oil in the micro voids.  Should work for my purposes perfectly since its intended for a much more robust industrial application than a sak.  :D

Meanwhile I built a 93 configuration that I have never done before.  :D

Not making those no.  I got those from one of those short runs of remakes.  Can't remember what models they were.

On an 84?  Yes but would need to be modified or it would sit too high.
