I started on a little diversion tonight.  I thought it might be fun to make an 84mm pioneer.. Pioneer Jr!

Here I have some hard anodized 84mm scales, and a hand made hard brass liner.  The scales and liner are already drilled out to 1/8, but the components and springs still need drilling, but it wont take too long to finish.  If I measured right the awl will juuuust fit with appropriate spacers.

I figured I should put together an urban pioneer with the hard anodized scales I have.  I got it together pretty quick and it looks really nice! :D :D :D

Oh I like that idea. Mind is I borrow it and make one for myself? I plan to add saw and scissors to mine but with pins instead of screws. Nice job though I love it.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Here's my latest that got finished tonight for a member here.  Two alox compacts with spare blades.

They turned out darn nice and are really light weight pocketable tools.  I will be making one for myself next.

Cheers!

All tools and springs are drilled out to 0.125".  That's the smallest commercially available hardened barrel pivot.  If I had the funds I'd commission custom 3mm pivots, but I'm not quite there yet.  :D

Here's the latest one I've been working on for a forum member.  Black alox urban pioneer with pocket clip.

I wasn't too sure if 1/8 inch aluminum was going to be strong enough to hold threads for this, but I tested on a messed up scale I had and it held fine.  I will likely swab the inside of the hole with some JB weld to toughen up the threads on final assembly though as some extra insurance.

This style of clip really does look nice I think!  I will have to order some of these for my own mods next time I make a pivot order.

Cheers!

The screws were filed down so they are perfectly flush with the inside backing of the scale.

Thanks!  This is a pretty addictive hobby... :D  I still think it's funny I'd never heard of alox before this forum! lol

I forgot to post these ones.  Check out how nice some boring standard alox liners can look after meeting up with a polishing wheel.

The bottom one is one I removed from a gently used SAK and its pretty sad looking, but close to what even brand new ones look like.   I had no idea cheap nickel silver could shine like chrome.  Its almost beautiful!

Did you flip the scales for the clip? Or even figure out why that was done by Scibeer?

Yep I did flip the scales.  It felt better in the hand for main blade work swapped around.  Well that's assuming the clip goes on the back scale and not the shield scale.  Other than that I cant figure out any other reason to flip the scales.

Today I went back to working on my 84mm pioneer with converted 91mm scissors.  I posted these pics in another thread, but will repost here for consistency.

These are the modifications I did to the old style 91mm scissors and 91mm backspring to fit on the 84mm frame.

And here is the rough fit up to test it all together.  I was testing the look of some designer low profile screws on the end pivots, still not sure if I love them or not.

The full cutting blade length of the scissors was preserved but I did have to nip a bit off the handle part.  The part of the awl that rides on the backspring will need to be re-angled to get the awl to point further down and rest on the scale as well.

Here you can see the scissor rest needs a bit more shaved off to let the scissors go just a bit lower.  Very close to working.

The scissor snap is perfect so I'm excited to finish this little gem.  See what you made me do Victorinox?  Would it really be that hard to keep making 84mm scissors???   :pok:

Nice job Syph007.

So the detached piece from the scissor spring is not attached in place, but is held in place by the two matching flats and the pivot?

That's correct. I've done that before myself. It works perfectly btw. Not intending to intrude here syph just trying to help.

Yup it's under tension so it doesn't move at all.  I make my scissor rests for 93mm similarly.

I got some 12 Gauge (0.105") stainless 304 that I will use now since it isn't hardened like a SAK spring it will be easier to work.  The rest also doesn't need to be spring tempered, so next time I will just chop off the springy part I need and make the rest out of non tempered stainless.

lol.. apologies to your work, but I've done the same reading threads in this section, so I know how it goes!

Nothing too exciting to look at yet, but this is what I spent all my free time doing this weekend.  Stripped naked SAK scales.. bare of all anodizing!

I had to track down 100% pure lye and strip these in the backyard.  Nasty nasty stuff, it was boiling away like a witches cauldron.  I got the ratio mixed so that each scale only needs about a 30 second dip and when I cant see any more red on the shield, it's done.

My first run I let the electroplater guy strip for me (lol that sounds odd) and some of the red remained behind, so I wanted to do the prep this time to be sure of what I get.   If the cost isn't too high this will get done in 3 colors HAIII black/red/orange... if it costs too much than just 2 colors either black and red, or black and orange.  I'm dropping them off in the morning and I hope he can be done soon since I'm super anxious to put some colored ones together!

Still waiting to hear about my anodizing....   I really hope he's done by the weekend!

Here is a test mock up of the part I made in my templaing thread.  This is a 0.105" thick rest made from 304 stainless, with super beefy keyring attachment.

This is a prototype test fit only, it still needs some adjustment, but it's darn close.

I think it looks pretty decent.
